Posted A Few Times, I Suppose It Is Time For An Introduction!

Good morning from Ottawa!

I have lurked on the site for quite awhile now and have even posted a couple of times, I decided it was high time I introduced myself in a more formal manner. I am a researcher in photonics/optics and originally was draw to fountain pens for the access to bottled ink as I was using preloaded ballpoints/gel pens at an alarming rate. I picked up a Lamy Safari demonstrator as a test and a bottle of blue waterman ink and then I suppose like most of us on here the bug bit and I have not really stopped.

While I started with Lamy I quickly branched out and have not really settled on one brand, my only real trend is towards fine nibs as I use them extensively for equations and derivations. While I "collect" pens I do not see myself as a collector per say as all of my pens are in the regular inking rotation and I try to make a point of using everything I have and only buying something I want to use. With this being said in addition to one of my Safaris my Faber-Castell Mondoro, Mont Blanc UNICEF Le Grand, Kaweco Sport and Esterbrook do seem to be inked more often than others.

In the interest of completeness below you will find my current collection of pens/inks. I look forward to being part of the community and seeing what everyone has to say.

Welcome aboard! Prepare to learn more about pens that you (or I) ever thought was possible! I've also been using an Easterbrook "J" a lot-- what a nice little pen!

That you for the welcome! OCArt, I love my Esterbrook! I sometimes wonder how much of it is that fact that it was my first fountain pen repair. I do not normally like smaller pens but the Gregg shorthand nib is such a nice fine nib, it is hard not to have it inked.

Welcome to the FPN! You made me realize that I haven't yet introduced myself! I like the idea of listing my pens, so when I get home that's first on my list.

You have a nice collection of pens and ink. Keep up the good work!

Thank you TMK and Frank! It is getting there, I expect it to stay random I get bored too easily with things being too similar so I tend to get drawn to pens that are different than anything else I have. Such as that Rotring Core I managed to get.

If I were forced to sum up my collection, I would have to say, "eclectic". I like all sorts of pens, especially those with unique filling systems or nibs. I tend to prefer modern pens, but have recently been branching out to buy some of the old classics. As far as ink goes, I am curious about most any "quality" ink; I don't want to harm my pens.

As a researcher, you are probably interested in the mechanics and engineering of fountain pens. If you haven't done so already, you should head to the Conid Pen Site, conidpen.com and look at the video of how they make them. Be warned, you will probably end up buying one, as I did, and then another . . . . They are a modern update of a classic Mont Blanc pen. I also really like the titanium nibs.

Best of luck with this interesting and useful hobby!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
