Your post made me go and take the box out of its packaging 'coz I was wondering the same thing.

3-inches clearance on top. Will fit small 30ml bottles but not the 50ml Iroshizuku types. However, the center drawer is tall enough to hold a few tall bottles.

Aside: Thought this find would be appreciated, and am happy to note that is the case. :-)

Thank you! Very helpful.

Stopped by my local Cosco's and picked up two of these. They are beautifully designed and well made. The Cosco Manager told me that they loaded up on them for Christmas thinking it would make a great gift for Dad's, etc. unfortunately sales were well beneath what they anticipated. They dropped the price significantly to try to clear out the warehouse. They must have had at least 50 out on the floor when I got mine. Almost a sumgai purchase!

Thanks again PenBrute for the heads up!

:( Lucky Americans getting the best stuff - I would have loved to get one but costco in the UK does not have it.

I'm not a Costco member but they only charged me an extra $2 plus tax. Great deal. Thanks for the heads up!!!

OOH! Good to know. I'm not a Costco member either; they won't sell us some of the stuff we need for our business, like frozen croissants -- they only want to sell us the ones they bake off (plus, IIRC, membership was more expensive than Sam's Club).

I don't need one of these... yet....

I do have a question for those who use penchests. Right now my 15 or so pens sit in a huge mug. All were inked at one time or another-- many have run out while the rest are still packing (ink). I take it that only empty pens should be stored horizontally in penchests.

I keep inked pens (various vintage) laying horizontally in a box with no problems. They may sit up to a week in between uses.

Evil enablers! I didn't know you could buy without being a member. Sigh...

Sorry.. but I can't figure out how to buy it if you are not a member. It asked for a membership number when registering to buy. :(

I have a similar chest. It's amazing how quickly it got filled. I used the top compartment for a multitude of battery chargers. But it would hold a whole bunch of ink bottles if you wanted to do that.

Those Costco prices are a steal, grab at least one chest while you can.

As a curious question, what are the inside physical dimensions of the box for the larger trays on the bottom? Also, when you bought the inserts, did they have a funny smell?

I just got one recently for $40 also. :) However, the box also had a strange smell when opened. Anyone else experience this?

Thanks for the great tip. I almost bought one for Christmas, but just couldn't do it for $99. A month or two ago I saw them for $69, but still couldn't quite bring myself to do it. For $40, I couldn't resist!

Mine has of course not arrived since I bought it last nite but the smell will probably compliment my "stinky" new Brass Kaweco Sport!

(Which I have YET to notice having ANY smell) I would imagine a good "airing out" should take care of offending odors from recent manufacture. I am not opposed to removing the drawers & dropping the front down for a few weeks if necessary. Sadly I don't have any new Noodler's pens to complicate the situation!

Just keep working through the checkout procedure and leave the membership number blank. Make up a password when it asks for one. When you finally get to the payment page you will see a US $2.00 fee assessed because you aren't a member. The site accepted my order and sent me a confirmation email almost immediately.

My chest did not come from Costco. It is a Grizzly chest and is a similar design but larger, with 10 drawers. So the dimensions of mine will not match the dimensions of the Costco unit.

I have a lot of pens so that chest is pen cabinet 3 of 4 for me. I guess I'm so used to the inserts that I just don't smell them anymore.

The wooden map chest is my main cabinet. I've mostly moved out of the little black cabinet, the one open drawer in the second photo is the only drawer that still has any fountain pens. A couple of drawers have pencils and ballpoints and a couple of more have tools. The rest are empty

The top five drawers of the map chest have fountain pens.

This old silverware cabinet is my newest pen cabinet. For some reason I've never gotten around to taking any pictures of it since I've filled it with pens. The four drawers are now all in use for pens but none of them are totally full. And there are some special items such as boxed calligraphy kits and other special boxed items in the bottom cupboard. This cabinet is now located on the left side of my desk, opposite the map chest which is on the right. I don't even have to get out of my chair to reach any pen in either cabinet.

In this case, there was no need for resolve, hence it went away. And the shipping alone on that box has to be steep...

Actually shipping is free, I'm ordering mine right now. :)

I think he was talking about my remark regarding that I almost bought something similar from a store in the UK and decided against it at the last minute.

Ah, ok that makes sense! I am so looking forward to it's arrival, I could have just gone and gotten one, but this way I'll have time to figure out where I'm going to put it! Oh and I'll be taking advantage of the link for the pen inserts too!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
