Imperial Blue - Diamine

Manufacturers since 1864, Diamine Inks relocated to this purpose built 'state of the art' factory in Liverpool in 1925, where they successfully carried on using the traditional methods and formulas for ink production. Over the years the company has changed hands and are now located close to the world famous Aintree Race Course

Imperial Blue is decent blue ink. I'm not a fan but there's just nothing to complain about it. Except for the color I'm not crazy about.

Great samples.

It is my first ink, and i like it. Good to use in any occasion. Used it for a quite until i got a hold to other inks, including my favourite Turquoise now.

I like the colour of the ink and its intensity but colours are a personal matter. However, whilst I love the ink, I have had one or two issues with a couple of pens with flow problems which I am sure is due to this ink because other Diamine inks, e.g. Sapphire Blue don't have the same effect.

Favourite pens in my collection (in alpha order): Caran d'Ache Ecridor Chevron F and Leman Black/Silver F; Parker 51 Aerometric M and F; Parker 61 Insignia M, Parker Duofold Senior F; Platinum #3776 Century M; Sailor 1911 Black/Gold 21 Kt M; Sheaffer Crest Palladium M/F; Sheaffer Prelude Silver/Palladium Snakeskin Pattern F; Waterman Carene Deluxe Silver F

Thanks for the review. This is still one of my favorite inks. I have found it to behave well in all of my pens.

Looking for an Omas Arco Verde...the one that got away.

I really enjoy the thoroughness of your reviews; many thanks for doing them.

Diamine Imperial Blue was the first bottle of ink I bought after getting my Lamy Safari, and I'll always have a soft spot for it. Also, I genuinely love it; it has more purple for me than I see in your scans (though that could just be my screen), which is exactly what I was looking for when I got it. I expect it will be one of my permanent go-to inks.

Blurple! I love Blurples.

Vis, is it supersaturated and almost retina searing? Will I like it more than Bilberry or Sargasso Sea?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
