Jinhao 886 … Ordered Apr 30, Delivered May 18!

I've waited longer for pens that cost 60 times as much! This pen is $2.99 delivered to your door by a uniformed member of the Postal Service!

And it is terrific, at least by my standards - how does it look and feel, how does it write, and do I want to keep it rather than give it away. OK, lets not dignify these with the word 'standards' but call them what they are: my very subjective views which do not include 'good for what it is at the price'.

1. It writes out of the mailing envelope. All I did was fill it with Noodler's Apache Sunset.

2. It seems to be a true medium nib with a bit of flex.

3. It is a great design. Very smooth and sophisticated proportions, definitely modern. And the yellow is yellow! I am sure the rest of the palette must have this same sense of assurance.

4. The pen is plastic with a pleasant warm feel to the touch. The weight is a bit heavier than you might have thought it would be so there is a deliberate quality designed in rather than the dead weight by default of the Chinese brass pens.

5. The converter is a quality screw type rather than a slider or the kind that comes apart in your hands.

So saying, the Jinhao 886 is a keeper by my standards and I think that Jinhao has another winner on it's hands similar to the plastic 599.

I won't be giving it away to the first respondent.

Dick

A pen for $2.99? That just seems absurd to me. I would be afraid it would explode on my desk or in my pocket.

Dick, you are pretty lucky in getting it so fast. I've been waiting for about a month for a shipment from China...

I have a green one and a red one and they have been in regular use for the better part of a month. I'm even starting to wonder if I prefer these over the 599. Same nib and converter as on the plastic 599s, but there is something about the design of the 886 that I really like.

Dan in Montreal,

Yes, I agree. While the 599s are in a (very) small group of Chinese pens that I think are worth keeping, the 886s are a more original style. The 599s, good as they are (and they are good!) still depend on anther's concept for their origin.

Perhaps the 886 has sprung full-blown from the brow of Jinhao fully armed, and this is the basis for the appeal.

I have one of these in red and it's a very smooth, wet writer. I rather fancy the gold and the spiderweb versions too. There's no way to go wrong at that price, with free shipping. :)

I was lucky to purchase this about a month ago and got in less than two weeks, which is pretty impressive for free shipping from China. I too love this pen, the feel is very pleasant, and it writes comfortably. It's a steal in my book, and quite underrated compared to the x450, x750, and 159 cousins.

I have a yellow one and a green one, both super bright, and I think they're great--not special to write with, but more than adequate, and definitely lots of fun to look at. Mine came pretty quickly, too.

Currently in rotation: Wing Sung 698/Diamine Blue Velvet, Wing Sung 618/Diamine Golden Oasis, Lamy Profil 80/Pelikan Edelstein Aventurine

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
