Hello.

I received today these two beauties, but I am a bit confused because I saw from another member of FPN images of these two fountain pens and the size of them is totally opposite to mines:

My Ramsés is bigger than the Nikolai, and this member shows the contrary...

What do you think?

And this one is the other FPN member picture:

I read in the forum that those pens had a few small design changes/ different production runs. This might explain the difference.

Something about naming a pen after Bloody Nicholas doesn't sit too well, design aspects and other considerations about the pen model left aside...

I believe (correct me if I am wrong) that both pens were available in 114, 144 and 146 sizes and I have heard that the 146 came in an early and late version with slightly different lengths. Perhaps someone else can come up with the right answer?

If the variance annoys you, I'll be happy to give them a forever home...

I think that the malachite FP is in 146 size, and Ramses II should be based on the 144. I also attached photos of my collection (citrine, lapis lazuli, and malachite, all are in 146 size).

I thought the same thing about Thomas Mann.

Hard times don't last, but hard people do.

Thank a Veteran.

Clearly the pens are different. Look at post #5 in this thread; it shows C/C fillers based on the old 144 series. In post #9 the pens in this thread show the Legrand pens based on the olds 146 piston fillers.

Hard times don't last, but hard people do.

Thank a Veteran.

I'd ask what's so hard about it, but the modern pens have so much similarity, it can get very confusing.

Ramses II seems better suited to a Trojans product than a fountain pen name.

Ahem! Just a reminder that we have children on this board. Let's not make 'em grow up any faster than they already do these days.

My gosh, My favorite go to pen at present is my Ramsis II, rollerball... I drool daily over a blue FP version. I guess you can't have everything :P

I recall in college placing my Mont Blanc Ramses II on the table, with the sun shining upon it. It was like some Worldly object that drew attention with great degree! Im curious if there is a 24k version.

These are beautiful and I don't think I have ever heard of them or have seen them. Feel really partial to the Malachite looking one.

All I can say is that my suspicion all along has been correct.

Large number of members here are lurkers although they have stunning pieces in their collections. They bring them out when necessary hehe show us more pls :)

As for the topic. Yes I've seen 144 and 146 versions of these pens.

Late to the party - the last picture is mine. Both are 146 size. The Ramses is an older version which is vermeil. The later 146 Ramses were gold over brass and longer. The vermeil models of both pens turn a darker shade of gold over time which I find more pleasing.

Stay well,

Solomon

Please excuse the poor photo. Both pens are on the right.

@Ruaidhri This was an absolutely wonderful bit of writing, and I hope that you're able to maintain the style once all of the medications are out of your system.  Take care and recover quickly!

These comments make me sad as I sympathise with Ruaidhri, having great difficulties in being taken seriously. Or being taken at all (no off-colors jokes, please!) In spite of overwhelming odds,  Ruaidhri -now I know how to spell it- made a courageous decision and stuck to it. I was diagnosed with a similar growth in a place I will not reveal. Oh, well, if you insist it was Mount Sinai Hospital. But I firmly intend to walk in Ruaidhri's footsteps, if he will let me, on my next visit to Dublin.

Reminds me of the day my associates and I developed a cure for all mankind's ills and mistakenly wrote it down with invisible ink.

Was that the end of the Laboratory? Somehow the exactitude created a fully destructive device, as always!
