I signed up for an alert when Gouletpens gets them back in stock. I'll buy two!

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

I'm really pumped to try this pen and ink. I've been wanting to try HOD for a while and have been holding off till I could get one with the Charlie.

Goulet has the HoD with free Charlie Pens in stock as of earlier today. Er, I mean 1414 (2:14 pm) yesterday. Insomnia sucks.

And some Charlie's will be in with the new FPN ink coming in June.

Yes. They will make announcements when it gets closer to time. We (or FPN) have done it many years.

I hope this pen gets good feed back, because he states it may become a permanent pen in the bottles!

This video is so awesomely dramatic. I love Nathan.

And I've got a bottle in the mail too (hit the payment button yesterday afternoon). Looking forward to trying the pen out.

The ink? Well, I'm not much for black to begin with. I have two bottles of black (Conklin and Delta) that were swag from DCSS, one each year -- both unopened. And a nearly full bottle of Noodler's Old Manhattan. Not to mention a bunch of ink samples, a half-used bottle of Quink Black (modern), a couple of bottles (one large, one small) of vintage Quink Microfilm ink, and a mostly full bottle of Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black.

Oh, and I forgot to add the Pen & Ink brand non-shellac India ink (although that's more greyish).

I'm quite excited for this new pen, especially the ebonite feed! I love being able to make a pen obnoxiously wet to accommodate my huge stub grinds!

I got a couple of bottles of Noodlers HoD and the Charlie pens in the mail last night. Been wanting to try this pen out for months now.

Ive been drawing all day with one of the pens. Perfect for what I do and love the ink volume.

Although I have discovered that HoD ink is not my favorite ink for cartooning. Getting very slight feathering. Probably stick to Noodlers black for cartoons. But the pen is a keeper. It will be in my travel bag of pens for sure as an everyday drawer.

Interesting. I wasn't getting any feathering in my ink journal entry (paper is a Piccadilly sketchbook from B&N and it does weird stuff to ink colors sometimes) -- but was getting a tiny bit of show/bleedthrough when the Charlie nib was heavily flexed.

What I'm NOT getting is black. I don't know whether it's because (a) the pen is new and I had to prime the feed a bit by sticking the nib under running water briefly; (2) the nib unit wasn't quite dried out from when I flushed it last night; (3) the pen just isn't drawing correctly (i.e., a QC issue); (4) the ink bottle needs to be agitated/shaken up a bit in order to get the dye components mixed back in; (5) this is just a matter of it being a different batch of HoD; or (6) this is just a case of the paper being weird with inks again.

I do like that the ink seems to be pretty water resistant. But I don't think it's going to be "the new black". It might not even be a substitute for Noodler's Old Manhattan (FPH exclusive) which is *also* an eternal ink.

On the plus side, I like the cap color on the pen itself, which is sort of a dark teal with swirls of purple/red in a similar intensity, so the swirling is very subtle.

Do you do something to the feeds?

Do you do something to the feeds?

Yep! It's a little thing I do to lots of pens with removable feeds. I take a very very sharp knife and run it along the feed channel. It is much easier with ebonite feeds, but it can still be accomplished with standard #6 plastic feeds. Also, I also take the liberty of cutting some extra grooves in and make the connection point with the back of the pen wider, so more ink will flow.

So they write super wet then? Or how does that change the flow?

The feed mod makes the pen pretty wet. Opening the tines a bit then creates a crazy wet pen, as the feed can now support it. The feed mod is also important if you have big, wide stubs like a 1.8mm that you want very wet. Normally, the feed would starve the flow.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
