This sure did creep up on me quick this year. We are planning a trip to the coast this weekend so another trip to Raleigh might make things a little bit tight. I'm still gonna try and make it at least one day. I must. I'm only a stones throw away!!!

Most definitely. Went to Fort Fisher for the weekend two weekends ago. Planning on going to the WRAL Balloon Festival Memorial Day weekend. Yet, I am still going to spend the weekend at TPS. Besides, how could you not at least come for a second, you are not that far away and you are from the home of Franklin-Christophe. Krispy Kreme is another story, I am a Dunkin Donut Lady myself. :lticaptd:

If I only go for one day, which day should I go? I plan on mostly looking at pens but I do want to buy a bargain or a pen I have been looking at.

If anybody wants to buy a FPR triveni, a waterman's crusader with a modified barrel, or faber castell pitt brush pens I have one just for you!

When I went many years ago, and just went for one day, I went on Saturday. Believe I had enough time to kind of do what I often do in malls. I perused all the tables, then went back to ones I found something interesting to want to take a second look or purchase something. I also picked up business cards and introduced myself. Now, you might have to do something a little different if you want to either have a Nib Meister tune your pen or want to introduce yourself to one and get a business card for sending your pen later on.

However, If you have no particular interest and simply browsing, perhaps either Friday or Saturday. Saturday all the vendors will be already set up from Friday. So, I would say either Saturday, or second choice would be Friday. I decided to attend this year initially on Friday. I am still deciding whether I want to spend the entire weekend at this point. Yet, I am going to attend Friday - Saturday. Either one of these days would be good for one day. Apologies for the rambling.

Sunday also works well. The important thing is to just come.

I have to admit that I am partial to the DD holes. Especially the chocolate ones!

Did you say Chocolate? Unless something has changed Brandon Lee of Modern Chocolatier will be at the show. If you have never had his chocolates, you are in for a real treat.

Got my hotel room all set and have spent some time preparing my wish list, notes, and Secret Plan B Escape Route (just in case). ;) Looking forward to the show and to meeting some fellow stylophiles!

Schedule is getting all turned around. Now it looks like I'll be there on Friday afternoon. Just glad I was able to work it all out.

See y'all there!

I'll be attending :) And this'll be my first pen show.

Do anyone know if bartering is accepted or frowned down upon? I would love to trade/use two pens that I don't use but are still in great condition as bargaining chips for a Pelikan M800.

Hope to see some of your lovely faces there :)

You enjoy a safe journey. Leaving out tomorrow after dropping a tiny bird off for weekend boarding. One of the first places I am going to visit is from your neck of the woods, Franklin-Christophe. If I am lucky, what I purchase from them will be the only new acquisitions. Although, if my last TPS years ago is any indication, as I vaguely recall even now, access to Mad Money is also anticipated. Hoping to share some insights, but may simply enjoy the show and take notes for later sharing when I return. We shall see....

Hey, Aetheric. (you don't mind me called you Aetheric, do you?) :)

Bartering and trading has been known to happen at pen shows. You can also sell outright. If you don't have a table, then you should be more aware of reasonableness of the volume of your business. If you're trying to unload 15 pens to various passers by, that might be frowned upon. If you talk to the sellers and see something you're interested in, and have something you think they might want in exchange, it's possible. Your example sounds quite reasonable.

Last year at the show my cash was low so I did some trading. This year I may have a pen or two I may be interested in selling/trading. For the dealers, it's a good deal because they have a chance to see a potential purchase in person. But also don't be offended or disappointed if they're not interested in trade but only want cash. I have heard of some getting offended if their offered trade isn't accepted. No one is obligated to sell, buy or trade beyond what's sitting out with a price on it. Remember, these people have probably seen just about everything, and the common pens many, many times. That plum P51 may be a once-only for you, but they've probably bought and sold many more than you've ever seen.

It all comes down to good manners, respecting the other person's decision and being willing to walk away amicably if the deal doesn't suit one of the parties.

It's actually a lot of fun seeing all of the pens. Enjoy yourself!

Nope, don't mind you calling me that at all :)

I only have the two (maybe three) pens that I'm planning to part with so I'm definitely not trying to make a profit or anything from it. I'll not be offended or disappointed if no one's interested. I was planning to save for the M800 as a (very) nice gift to myself around the holiday season, but if I can snag one this weekend that'll be all the sweeter.

I'm sure I'll enjoy myself wonderfully in any case (:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
