Recommend Gray-Leaning, Wet Blue-Black?

Sailor Kenshin

Recommended Posts

I had been using Chesterfield Sodalite (which is, I THINK, some sort of Diamine ink) as my gray-leaning blue-black.

However, I just filled a hooded Jinhao 599 and the ink looks gray. Just gray. And it seems very dry. Perhaps it's IG? In any case, it doesn't seem to be the ink I started out with.

So what I'm after is something WET and lubricated, a blue-black that tends toward gray but still has identifiable blue components.

Not greenish. I love that, but have plenty of those!

Thanks for your suggestions.

And I want before I die
My soul's verses to bestow.

The modern, Slovenia-made Blue-Black is very good.

I used to enjoy Pelikan BB, but I am less and less drawn to it (I still have a little bit left). Perhaps I've convinced myself I prefer other BB inks since it is no longer distributed in North America...

I can also recommend Platinum Blue-Black - it is bluer than the Sheaffer, but it is very well behaved.

Iroshizuku Shin-kai sounds ideal for your needs. No green in it at all.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

I would also suggest Shin-Kai. I was really REALLY impressed with the sample I had.

Sheaffer Skrip Blue Black.

+1

Exactly what I was going to suggest!

And also Shin-Kai. They are similar but Shin-Kai is more complex looking, a little more blue (& more pricey)

I was looking at some of my ink swatches and I think J. Herbin's Bleu Nuit (Night Blue) might also fit the bill.

Now I have to give some consideration to Shin-Kai. Looks awesome.

Bleu Nuit is very blue in comparison. I know it's popular but I'm not a fan as I think it's not quite anything. But then other than the 1670 range, I'm not a fan of J. Herbin inks (except for Perle Noir & Verte Empire)

I have tried seven inks in my collection so far, including Bleu Nuit...and I feel like Goldilocks. This one's too blue (that's YOU, Bleu Nuit!), this one's too gray, this one's too green.

Am getting more samples in. Thanks for the suggestions!

So I dip- tested as many inks as I could on a small piece of Rhodia. I used inks sent by two kind people (sincere thanks to you both for your generosity!), plus the few I had on hand that were suggested.

Only the Diamine Denim was actually loaded.

The color in this scan isn't fully accurate, but you can see Diamine Twilight was too green, and JH Bleu Nuit too blue for this Quest, though both are lovely and useful colors. The Hudson looks almost as blue in the scan as Bleu Nuit but isn't.

Of my own inks, visually, the OS Manganese and Hero come close. Of the Ink Gifts, I loved the Tanzanite, Chopin, and HH. Next: Loading a few pens and taking them for a short test-drive. Stay tuned. ;)

First post on FPN, yay! I've grown fond of Caran d'Ache Magnetic blue, a great blue black with a hint of grey. Quite saturated but still very subdued. Nice amount of shading. Although it's a bit expensive, it's very suitable for daily writing.

Isn't Pelikan BB dry?

I LOVE Organic Studios Blue Merle. It sounds like exactly what you are looking for. I'm still trying to find a replacement for it, since it is no longer produced and failing. It has great co,or, flow, is well behaved on cheap paper, and cleans out so easily.

I need to try Skrip and Iro.

There is a group of Diamine grayish blue-blacks. Let's see ... Denim (dark), Prussian Blue (moderately dark), Indigo. Shin-kai is a favorite, but too wet for some of my nibs. Akkerman #9 (Laan van Nieuw Oost - Indigo) is lovely. Quite similar to Shin-kai, to my eye.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
