Enjoy the new pen! Since you're in Mass, a few things ~ there's an active Boston Pen Club; in Boston, Bromfield's is a great pen store; finally, check out the many Noodler's inks. Since they are from Mass as well, they have many themed inks from the state :)

Hello from Western Mass! I used to think I liked fine nibs but secretly liked medium nibs. They lay down the ink really nicely, and with more ink coming through the nib, the color of the ink is more evident. At least it is to me, as I'm rather nearsighted. (My 2.5 year old daughter is the one wearing the reading glasses in my photo) The pens you've named are a good start, as they sound really reliable. I hear lots of good things about the Lamy Safari, and I might have to get myself one of those new orange ones if I keep hearing such good things about them.

Hope you're enjoying yourself here! Welcome! :W2FPN:

Kansaskyle recently joined up and had a similar question. He ended up making a chart:

Hope this helps,

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Thank you thats all so interesting! Especially because I Love Noodlers ink! I have the basic Blue and Black from him and im amazed. I want to get Liberty's Elysium next because im an avid user of blue inks and blue is my favorite color. I adore royal blue and sapphire hues. I'd love to go to Boston and check that out but its a bit far seeing as how i dont have my license nor a car atm. Maybe someday tho!

Happy Writing from Mass!

Thank you and i agree because i now have a fine nibbed lamy safari and a Medium Japanese nibbed Jinhao x750. Believe it or not I like the Jinhao more because the nib is smoother and lays down more ink in a line that is also thicker (i too wear glasses! Lol) and btw your daughter is adorable ☺️

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. Fountain pen is a great hobby although it can become expensive overtime. The choice to start with Safari is good.

Wish you all the best

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
