My Italic In Progress 2

Maurizio

Recommended Posts

Here's another worksheet of italic practice. I still need work on spacing and consistency, but I'm getting there very slowly.

Pen: Pilot Parallel 3.8 (used as a dropper-filler)

Ink: Noodler's Blue

Paper: Southworth by Neenah Wicked White Inkjet & Laser 25% cotton, 24 lb. (found at Staples).

Excellent formal italic. Now, about that cursive italic ...

Enjoy,

Thanks for you kind words gentleman. I practice in whatever spare time I can grab, mostly on weekends.

Re cursive italic. I already have Write Now[i/] and practice some of its exercises, and, I just bought the Barchowsky book Fix It Write [i/]. I'm just trying to develop a neat and plain cursive writing which is a mixture of the "loopy" cursive I learned in grade school and the better cursive italic. One great tip Write Now recommends, which I've started doing, and which also helps when I do practice formal italic, is to practice arches in spare moments which I do now when on the phone, stuck in Court or other places.

Wonderfully executed! I saw this paper at Staples, but was not sure if it was good. Now I know. Thanks for posting.

Thanks Patrick.

Glad I provided good intel on the paper. Like many of the people here, I"m always on the prowl for decent paper at reasonable cost. Saw this in Staples and took a chance. It turned out to be decent; a bit expensive, as I recall, $10 or $11. for 300 sheets, not a ream, but it's a paper which takes ink well.

Southworth has always been worth the money. I still have a hundred or so sheets of 100 % cotton, designed for typewriters. Of course, it works equally well with fountain pens. For very special projects, of course.

It's true that many of us are always on the prowl for decent paper. I think that once one has tried a decent paper, it's hard to go back to not knowing what good paper feels like.

Don't know whether you use legal pads or not, but I've recently discovered the joys of sugarcane paper. I buy Rhodhia and sometimes Clairefontaine to practice calligraphy but can't see using it for daily practice of handwriting, it's just too expensive. Got a Staples Eco Easy sugarcane notebook and the paper is very good. Then I've discovered Cane Fields legal pads on Amazon. This paper is also very good. Darn price just went up but it's still a lot less expensive than Rhodia, 12 pads for $25.50 or so. Great paper for my daily scribbling.

Very attractive, consistent Italic, Maurizio. You have a very steady hand. :)

When I find something which works for me, I tend to stick with it. For a long time, I've been using IQ Selection Smooth Mondi paper for just about all my writing with edged and pointed nibs. It comes in various weights - my choice is usually 100 gsm. It has a beautifully smooth, uncoated surrface and is relatively inexpensive for such a high quality item.

Wow. - thank you for your kind words Ken. I'm flattered by your attention.

I still need much work on spacing and more work on consistency of letterforms. I am not, sadly, a "natural" craftsman with a steady hand. I practice whenever I can steal time, mostly on the weekend. - busy work life. But coming from you the words are encouraging and motivating. Thanks.

Thanks also for the reference to the paper. I'll try to get some.

Good job!

I hope you're saving all your practice sheets, so you can appreciate your progress

Thanks for your encouragement.

Yes I save practice sheets. My progress is very slow but noticeable. The sheets from a year ago are too embarrassing to show.

A note on sugarcane paper. Franklin-Christophe has a lovely writing paper, made from sugarcane, and quite a bit heavier than the standard Staples Eco paper. Bought some yesterday, really good for fountain pen work. Only drawback, it's shaded pink. Oh, well ...

Enjoy,

Randal

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
