After many years I have decided to going back to practicing my calligraphy. The thing is that I have lost the original book which I learnt from originally. I was wondering if maybe someone could suggest a low priced, but good quality workbook for me so I can get going again.

Thanks

Please take a look at Calligraphy in 10 Easy Lessons by Eleanor Winters. It's clear and straightforward; and the explanation of the letterforms are easy to follow.

Sorry to go a bit off topic. Could someone please explain to me how I can put text in italics? Thanks!

Sorry to go a bit off topic. Could someone please explain to me how I can put text in italics? Thanks!

When I go to post on a topic, a box comes up with various options for "Font", "Size", etc. Below those are symbols for for "Bold", "Italic", "Underline", "Strikethrough", etc.

Just highlight the passage you want to italicize and click the italic button.

An alternative—on my mac—is the hit the "command" key and the letter "I" to start typing in italics, like this. Then one has to type "command" and "I" again, to go back to regular type, like this. On a PC, I believe, the option key will have the same effect. Hope this helps.

(Edited to add a " —I'd put it in quotation marks, but that would confuse me!)

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

I almost forgot, I like Margaret Shepard's Learn Calligraphy book, too. I took a calligraphy course years ago and it was required reading.

Of course, the not-so-secret thing is to practice, practice, practice.

Thanks to all for your help. I think Roseofsharon has it for me because I usually use an ipad to log on to the FPN. I don't get those nifty buttons when I make a post, but next time I need italics I'm goin to try to put the i in front and the /i in back.

Thanks; it works!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
