Wee Deep Dip Pen, With Cap

Alexcat

Recommended Posts

I got this.....it's a tiny Esterbrook dip pen, with an e tea large dip nib(photos show it as it arrived....have as yet done nothing to it)

On the nib :

314

R. Esterbrook relief( Im assuming "relief", as the 'r' is under the barrel)

Altogether, capped around 6"

I love how it has a cap, and plan to use it as a test pen, when Im trying to choose an ink. It's just a very pretty little thing, and I'd love to know more about it....anyone got any information?

Also any advice on care, cleaning, and if/where such replacement nibs are available....

I hope it's ok to post in more than one place - wasnt sure where this should go. Mods. please give me a gentle ticking off if I shouldn't have done it :)

Alex

Alas, not that I know if. Got it on fleabay UK. Seller listed it thusly:

" Elegant Dip Pen. Tortoise shell type holder and cap.

Easterbrook nib 314 Reliefe

"

Here's the picture from the listing.....post-110936-0-74639000-1427363348.jpg

Trying to decide if/how to clean it up. Meantime, just cooing gently over it....it's so sweet :)

I saw this on ebay, I asked if the pen itself (rather than the nib) had any marking to suggest it was made by Esterbrook, but received no response. Therefore I did not bid.

out of curiousity, can I ask the new owner the same question?

I have just had a very close inspection, and as far as I can see, no, there's nothing on it which would say it was made by Esterbrook.

(And I really don't like it when sellers don't answer questions. Very rude, very unprofessional)

I only use a dip pen for trying out new inks and that nib is the one I use. I tried others but because I don't practice, it seems the easiest to handle. They are on ebay very often.

Looking for a black SJ Transitional Esterbrook Pen. (It's smaller than an sj)

It's an Easterbrook nib but probably not an Easterbrook made pen. That is the nature of dip pens. You can use any brand of nib.

Cool! I just bought a real dip pen (already have a couple Esterbrook with the renew point holders), and have a small set of nibs coming. I like using one for my journal, and to try out new inks.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
