Hi there,

I obtained this MB FP recently. I don't know every much about it.

Could some one please help me find out more about it?

I was looking at the recent articles on identifying fake MB, but couldn't find anything on this model.

I have attached some photos of the pen.

Many thanks :)

Apparently I'm "not allowed" to buy "anymore pens".... this is why I have a separate bank account from my wife :P

Current pens on rotation: MB 146 (F), Lamy 2000 SS (M & F), Parker Duofold (M) in MB Oyster Grey, MB 146 BP, Lamy Logo BP.

It´s a MB 144 known also as the Classique.

It is original for sure!

Made during the 80´s and 90´s I believe.

Best regards

It's a 144 Classic but it's not completely original as Montblanc made it, as the original would have a bordeaux section, barrel and cap.

Montblanc never issued their bordeaux pens with black sections. So if the section is black, then it's a replacement from a black pen

Hello Chrissy, this is not correct, the first 144 in bordeaux have been delivered with a black grip section. Later, after the second view ( from the marketing ) to this pen, there was the decision to make it also in bordeaux. It took more or less 18 month for the decision.

kind regards

Thank you for clarifying that fact too.

I once asked someone who was selling one on ebay, about the fact that it had a black section, and that information was what I was told. Maybe I shouldn't have just believed it.

Maybe that seller had swapped the section over and that's why he gave me that information..

IIRC the black section was only on the 144s too. The burgundy 146s were all burgundy from the getgo.

I'm no expert, but will confirm that my 144, purchased in the early 1980s, has a black section.

I never knew they did that.

I think the black section really gives it an elegant look.

I bought my burgundy 144 in the early nineties. It is all burgundy, including the section.

Your pen appears to have a broad nib. It would have also come with a converter.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Yes it has a converter.

There is a bit of rust on one of the rings. Wondering whether to get it replaced..?

Commonly on the 144, the ring on the end of the grip gets corroded as it's dipped in ink, and maybe not cleaned.

If you asked them, Montblanc would replace it for you as part of their level 1 service. They would make the whole pen look almost as good as new too within that price.

Bordeaux, not burgundy. The darker burgundy is found on far fewer Montblanc model pens. (I realize this is like whipping a dead horse.) dhorse.gif

I originally wrote bordeaux in my post, but switched to burgundy because that is the term jar used and he knows everything.

As for whipping dead horses, I believe that is illegal in some jurisdictions, now.

I just pulled three montblancs from storage-two fps and one rollarball. The bordeaux looks just like the OP's and I bought it from the Military Base Exchange while stationed in Germany in the late 80s early 90s. :)

Remember, anything I post is absolutely true, especially the parts I make up.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
