American Pen Company?

I was trying to be nice. They are neighbors. I like the beetle kill pine and I like people who make things out if it because we have a bunch of it out here in Colorado.

But they got me a little spun up with this video on their website: http://www.americanpencompany.com/Who-We-Are. I pulled a couple of quotes from the video:

"The American Pen Company began with the realization that we no longer manufacture fine writing instruments in this country."

"It allows us to bring a product of superior technology at a great value where the consumer has the opportunity to build the pen their way"

That really irritated me too. It goes to show - either they have not done their market research OR they purposely stuck their heads in the sand, refusing to acknowledge the competition (and fine quality competition, I might add), or they are attempting to come across in an arrogant fashion, beleiveing that no one in America can possibly come close to their wonderful products. I think they might be in for a little surprise.

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best!
Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

If they legitimately believe "fine writing instruments" were not being made in the US prior to their arrival, it could be argued that it's still the case. :lticaptd:

I don't care for the aesthetics, but I'm not going to bash them before they get started. I think it's great that they want to manufacture high quality pens in the USA. Perhaps they should build a reputation before expecting people to pay so high a price, first.

The pens look comfortable, at least.

Fountain pens forever and forever a hundred years fountain pens, all day long forever, forever a hundred times, over and over Fountain Pen Network Adventures dot com!

  • 1 year later...

Now I see why the comments for their YouTube video has been disabled :)

I came across their site and noticed all the same themes everyone else was, "no one is making fine pens". What????

As an owner of 3 Franklin-Christoph's, I disagree...

I emailed them and asked how their pens differ from F-C or Edison.

Have to admit, their claims are off-putting. I'll let someone else try them out. I'm not paying $$$$ for a company that doesn't explain anything about their location or process.

Pretty bland looking pens for the price. And they also seem pretty out of touch with the industry or they're trying to intentionally mislead unsuspecting buyers.

Their nibs are generic JoWo #5 nibs and I bet the converters are made by Schmidt. Their ink seem to be made by Yafa from the bottle design which is same as that of Monteverde. I don't see any real value there but I'll have to handle the pen to make a real opinion.

I have similar opinions about another such company out of some island in the Pacific. I don't see the point but will have to see one in person to decide if the pens are really worth it.

I recently bought this pen from a US pen maker (made out of cocobola wood) - I'd say he's making high quality pens!!!

It's no Esterbox, that's for sure.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

There used to be a company known as the American Pen Company that went out of business in the 1900s. I have one of their pieces from 1911, and to the best of my knowledge they specialized in flex nibs. This new one seems to be offering pens in the same price range. Could they be a resurgence or a scam?

A Ryan Krusac Legend! I got mine in amboyna burl from him at the Colorado Pen Show in October! Since Franklin-Christoph was in the next booth, I picked up a Masuyama-Jim medium italic stub. Mine is sitting right on my desk inked and in daily use.

That's two American pen companies right there :)

Ryan has been selling these pens so fast that he hasn't had time to put them on his website.

With a wooden body/cap and an ebonite grip, this is one sweet pen - love it!

The more I know about computers, the more I like my pens.

I think neither. They are for real. We invited them to show at the Colorado Pen Show last year and got no reply, though. My personal suspicion, based solely on proximity, is that they are a subsidiary of or somehow involved with the Colorado Pen Company. Both offices are located at:

10881 West Asbury Ave Suite 105

Lakewood, Colorado 80227

Odd they do not participate here, seems it would be in their interest. Or maybe we're an infinitesimal mcironiche of their customer profile. Someone call them! Invite them to the conversation.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

I've received no response from them regarding their manufacturing or materials... It's been since December 2nd.

Zero confidence in this company....

I also think they're a branch of the Colorado Pen Company - they're the only place you can buy them.
