Ink Review: Diamine Salamander

Recommended Posts

I'm currently reviewing some of my favourite Diamine inks. This is Diamine Salamander.

I decided to review this particular shade because I know there are people who want an alternative to Montblanc Racing Green, and Salamander is a good contender. It's very slightly less saturated than MbRG.

However, it looks very slightly greyer on the scan than it does on the original review form. The comparison inks look the same on the scan as they do on the review form.

  • Water test on the review form shows this isn't a waterproof ink.
  • Bearing in mind the paper I use is very smooth, and I write with a stub nib, this ink took 15-17 secs to dry.
  • It flows very well and lubricates the nib quite well. No start-up problems noticed. *Edited*
  • It is currently available in 30ml plastic bottles and 80ml glass bottles.
  • Diamine sell it directly to end-users on their web-site.
  • It's reasonably priced.

One of my favourite inks of all time.

And not just because it's the name that I gave it - at Diamine's invitation. Originally labelled 'No. 93'.

I just wish it looked a little more green than grey when it's dry. Other than that it's a good performer. The name fits the ink perfectly ;)

I know what you mean but it might depend on the paper and nib width etc. Doesn't everything?!

Not wanting to spoil you thread at all but have a decko at my original few comments. I think that if Salamander was mixed with a bit of the new Safari, an interesting result might well be on the cards.

I plan that for next week!

Thank you for the link. That was very interesting indeed, and your scans don't seem to show it as muddy as mine does.

As it happens, I also have Diamine Safari so I will await the results of your mixture with baited breath....

Thank you Davros. It looks greener on paper than it does in my scan. Especially on the swabs.

I bought a bottle of this when it first came out. I haven't opened it because I haven't decided what pen I want to put it in. This may motivate me to try it out. I do like dark inks that aren't just black.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

I think No. 93 is a better name.

Thanks for the review. I had tried this and found that the color didn't wow me, but that's the great thing about this hobby -- there are inks I like which other people can't stand, and vice versa, and that's okay. There's room for all of us.
