Diamine Saddle Brown

A very long whiles ago, I received a free pack of Diamine Saddle Brown cartridges from who knows where. I didn't try them till last week because I don't tend to use short international cartridges. Too costly, and not enough ink capacity. Anyhow, I was digging through my ink drawer last week and couldn't find an ink I haven't tried. Magically, this box of carts appeared before me, so I just went with it. Here are my thoughts of it, after using it for a solid week.

The review will follow my normal review patterns, with a picture following a small blurb. I have done my best to ensure color accuracy of the photos, but your mileage may vary. These were taken with an Apple iPhone 6, back camera, in afternoon lighting.

Here is a preview of the ink. At first look, it's definitely brown.

This review was written with my Xezo Leggionare FP in an M nib, which is a bit on the dry side. I didn't use my Nemosine this time, because it was loaded up for the Dragon's Napalm review. The review was written on my normal, and now discontinued, HP 28lb copy paper. If you are looking to pick some up, the HP 32lb is also nice.

Here is a swab of the ink showing some shading, from a light brown, to a very dark dark brown.

The ink behaves quite decently, with no major problems observed. I find this the similar case with most Diamine inks, so I am fairly satisfied with their brand. The flow of this ink is a little dry, exacerbated more by the already dry nib. I had to edit out the saturation part, because after looking at it more, it seems a bit more saturated, so I would give it a medium. Other than that, the ink is well behaved, even on some cheaper papers.

This ink dries quite quickly, at roughly the 7 second mark, on nonabsorbent paper. Pretty fast and no dry smear either.

Here is the water test. The top grid was dripped with water for 10 seconds, and then vigorously wiped. The bottom text was not dripped, and was only wiped in the same motion was the grid. The ink exhibited minor lifting on the drips, but is still noticeably on the page. However, the ink did show lots of wiping off, but wasn't the worst I have seen.

Lastly, here is a poorly drawn ghost, which shows how the ink looks when doodling. I can't draw for my life. I'm sorry.

Managed to forget the scan again! Here is it! Use it to read the review. Do not use it for color accuracy. The pictures have a better representation.

That's all folks! I would give this ink a 7/10. If you like this review, stay tuned for some more coming up!

I like this ink even though it's mediocre in every aspect. Thank you for nice review.

Totally agree with you. It's a nice ink but a terrible ink at the same time.

If you are experiencing problems, the picture links aren't broken. Just having a temporary blackout, knocking out my server. Should be back later tonight.

I think it's terribly nice :D Having said that, I much prefer Macassar.

I guess you are right. I have never heard of that ink! I quick Google search showed a very dark and rich brown! It looks awesome!

Thanks for the review. I am looking for a nice brown from Diamine and this one was shortlisted. Now I think I'm crossing it out.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
