Vintage Waterman Music Nib!

GClef

Recommended Posts

I knew almost immediately after posting that my guesstimate was too low, but now I`m really surprised :yikes:

Following my surf-history, I found that only a few weeks ago a single Waterman`s Music nib in similarly good condition went for about 240 $.

Compared to that, 1500 $ one week before ending seems outrageously high!

GClef, what have you done indeed :o

Looking at the seller`s other items, him obviously not being a professional pen seller, I have to say that I feel quite happy for him.

I would give 3 dollars just to see his reaction looking at his auction :D

PS: On the list it looks like the s***s guy/gal overbid himself all the time. WTH???

I'm really hoping those are genuine bids. I'd feel really horrible for the seller if those both turned out to be fake, because they blocked out other legitimate bidding at sane levels.

Fingers crossed. :)

Having bought/sold a few things on eBay, I had wondered about this. I think it's the result of not exceeding someone else's max bid. So if X's max bid is $100 and his current bid is $50, and Y bids $55, it's going to list X's first bid followed immediately by X's second automatic bid greater than $55, and so on until X's max bid is exceeded. For some reason Y's bid doesn't show up in the chain. I'm not sure why.

Still hoping that someone - GClef maybe?? - will tell us what a pen like this would normally go for, if there is such a thing as an average price. Why are these two folks willing to spend so much on this particular pen and nib? Was it made of precious resins from the moon and an extra-terrestrial metal from a meteor found in the depths of the Amazon rain forest? (And, unless s***s has decided that the price has reached the realm of the ridiculous, they probably aren't even done yet.) As they say: Inquiring minds want to know!

Exactly; it's not a handsome pen either.. I have at least ten pens that write as well if not better than that one, and none of them cost more than the equivalent of $100 and most of them a lot less, and they have gold nibs are from "first tier makers" and are vintage and so on.

Anyone remember this?

What do you think was the BIN (Buy-it-now) the seller was asking for the very same pen in the above link?

This auction reminds me of another infamous music nibbled pen that sold on eBay not too long ago.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-1950-039-s-SHEAFFER-SNORKEL-FOUNTAIN-PEN-RESTORED-RARE-FLEXIBLE-MUSIC-NIB-/221607656377?ssPageName=ADME%3AB%3AWNA%3AUS%3A3160&nma=true&si=dTnXQwtZG62LWBI2LNC8vhqC%252Fmg%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

It caused quite a stir on the Sheaffer sub-forum.

I'm happy for the seller though. They really had no idea what they had. It's cool when that happens.

Music nibs are fun to play with, but no doubt the people bidding high for such things are collectors, paying simply for rarity. If they were users, they could buy a good Japanese music nib pen for a hundred bucks or a bit more.

Besides, you want a REAL music nib, not those little versions (this is for a dip pen, for ruling music paper - anyone know if they ever did an FP version? If so, must have been a ED pen, as you'd really be going through the ink):

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
