It seems to be somewhat overpriced as the 616 Hero can be had for around one USD/free shipping from some vendors. The 616 is available in two sizes; the so-called jumbo or doctor size has a somewhat greater ink capacity and is only very slightly larger that than the "small".

It's my belief that purchasing the jumbo/doctor size is a gives greater assurance that the pen is a genuine 616.

The 616 is my most often used pen as it's comfortable to hold, doesn't dry-out, and puts down a consistently nice line on cheap paper.

Looks just like the one I got in the mail today. Nice pen.

How do you like it so far?

Is counterfeiting an Hero 616 like counterfeiting a Montblanc ? Or is it like

a Parker 45 made in France or Argentina ? What are the differences in

the "fake" ?

So far, I like it a lot. Especially for the price. Writes fairly wet on good paper , post nicely and feels good in the hand.

That looks like a real one to me. I don't have much experience with the smaller size, though, except for the 616-2. My first attempt to get a Hero was a 10-pack of 616s which turned out to be fake.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of a 616-2 (small size), a counterfeit, and a 616 Jumbo/Doctor. (I modified the finish on the real Heroes, so ignore that.)

The immediately noticeable difference in the hood length: the fake's hood is quite a bit longer than either of the real Heroes. The ink window (band around the middle) is about half as wide. The cap is also longer, and the etching is faint and misaligned. I usually just go by the length of the hood in ebay pictures.

Ebay seller Yespen has an illustrated guide showing a few more differences. Of the fakes I got, about half turned out to be decent writers anyway. The rest I dismantled for spares and ...experiments.

Sridhar, the hood on the fake I have is about 44mm. The Jumbo's hood is 36mm and the 616-2's hood is 33mm. I would think that the small 616 and the 616-2 are the same, but someone else who has both may have to chime in on that.

RNHC: Thanks! My brother borrows that jacket for job interviews, but he usually only has one pen in the pocket. :D I do love my arrow clips!

...the thought of someone counterfeiting a Hero makes my eyes cross.

Warning!! Only buy genuine fakes...not fake fakes.

Not even accusing 'em of being fakes. It's just... well, they're so cheap/inexpensive already, how can you make any money knocking 'em off?

Is a Vue-Pen Vac-Fill a fake? Is a Corona a fake? An Aurora 88? A Pelikan P1?

A Hero 616 might be essentially a copy of a Parker, but like the others I wouldn't call it a fake in this sense. There's no mistaking a 616 for a P51 or P21S, and Hero isn't trying to pass their pens off as actual Parkers. They've built their own tradition as inexpensive, reliable school pens and don't need to lean on somebody else's name or reputation. The "fake fakes," however, are trying to pass themselves off as something they're not. So I would consider them fake copies.

Sadly I don't know. I was merely getting cheap laughs at the expense of Hero. :lticaptd:

No idea...but they do.

I have a number of real 616s, both regular and Jumbo. Someone sent me a fake. What do you know...it writes well with Noodler's Eel Blue, but it blurped once, which was enough to rule it out as a carry pen.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
