TM, fabulous work as always!!!

Awesome craftsmanship by one of the finest gentlemen on FPN.

My favorite one yet. I have been collecting old photos for a similar use. Haven't got around to it yet.

Your design sense is impeccable!

Thank you

If you could find a thread to match the color of the leather -- that would look great!!

I think this is the closest I have ....

This one's on commission...

One of the requirements in the brief was something to do with beaches ...

another requirement was the colour yellow ...

and some leather somewhere ...

Hunted unsuccessfully for a beach scene , until I remembered I had beach photos from many moons ago....

These were taken on vacation ...

You can just feel the tropical heat ...

The photos are very nice,

taken with a LEICA Minilux , FUJIFILM ASA400.

This was taken in Phuket , Thailand , way back in 2003

That long ago and the photos remain in excellent condition, no colour fade.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147H%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20JMR%20Beach/001.jpg

Testing it out on the previous journal covers ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147H%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20JMR%20Beach/002.jpg

I felt a square format would be more ideal ..

Photos look impressive when presented on a black background...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147H%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20JMR%20Beach/003.jpg

And so that meant it had to be cropped ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147H%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20JMR%20Beach/003-1.jpg

At one point while cropping, I came across this nice format ...

And I thot this would be ideal to write the details of the photo taken on that larger bottom border ...

And I like my photos to have borders...

And so I had to crop my photos then create the white border.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147H%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20JMR%20Beach/006.jpg

But eventually I gave up the idea,

I felt it might distract ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147H%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20JMR%20Beach/008.jpg

I used these elements ...

yellow leather (more mustard )

black bookcloth

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147H%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20JMR%20Beach/009.jpg

I prepared the undercards ...

Everything carefully measured...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147H%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20JMR%20Beach/011.jpg

Again, skiving the leather was most tedious , laborious...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147H%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20JMR%20Beach/018.jpg

Gluing the leather in place ...

This leather is yellow and not tan ...

A very nice leather. I cant identify what kind of skin this is.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147H%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20JMR%20Beach/016.jpg

Looks promising ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147H%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20JMR%20Beach/021.jpg

The leather corners ..

A deep yellow ochre ...

The photo is sited on the rear cover ,

to allow the front cover to be more subtle.

I plan to add something of interest on the inside front flyleaf.

The photo placed in position,

I just so happen to have a copy of a similar photo but taken from further away...

The chestnut brown threads helped blend things together ...

Its a bit thickish - around 1.0mm or 1.1mm so it contributed to the 'swell' .

For this journal , I tried out something dfferent again.

Taking advice from the other bookbinding forum ,

I folded the entire signature at one go.

Not each individual folio which I usually do.

The objective is to have the signatures with rounded spines.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147G%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20EE%20Ladies/026-1.jpg

I am quite happy with the results ...

I am still havent worked out on making an A5 journal entirely of TR paper.

so I made an attempt - sort of experiment ...

I added 2 signatures of TOMOE RIVER paper ...

They are located at signature #3 and #5...

These TR signatures contain 12 folios each.

The other signatures contain only 4 folios each bcos they are heavier paper.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147G%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth%20-%20EE%20Ladies/025-1.jpg

I didnt want to place the TR signature in the middle, I was unsure if the soft paper could take the perforations that carried the ribbon.

Earlier on , I completed the covers ...

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/28367-homemade-journal/page-58?do=findComment&comment=2647118

The journal now completed ...

Journal #170 "Happy Dragonflies"

My 11th TR journal ...

A6 size

I went back to stitching with my usual threads (about 0.8mm) instead of the finer ones (#25 gauge).

I just wasnt content with not being able to use the flat profile threads.

I was pleasantly surprised it turned out well.

What I dont understand now is why !

I am not sure what I did that produced this round of success with TR paper.

I decided on blue stitches to blend in with the covers - the light blue swirls ...

I chose contrasting flyleaves

Blood red in colour with some texture.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20170%20Happy%20Dragonflies/020-1.jpg

Lets see ....

1) I did pull the stitches slightly tighter though this time ...

2) And I also recall the piercing for these stations are with a needle, ie, smaller holes (not with an awl - larger holes)

3) And there are 3 pairs of sewing stations - not the usual 2 pairs.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20170%20Happy%20Dragonflies/025-1.jpg

I am quite happy with the outcome.

I made a boo-boo though...

The one signature with the 12 folios , which is thicker is supposed to be at signature #1 and not #7.

I had intended to put the thicker (12 folio) signature at #1 becos the starting threads there are less - so it is thinner.

The last signature contains the tie-offs so it will be thicker from the swell.

Doing this , balances all the signatures out perfectly - all looking the same thickness.

If you examine the photo, you can just barely make out that the first signature can afford to be slightly thicker - but ever just so slightly.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20170%20Happy%20Dragonflies/024-1.jpg

No matter, those are finer details.

It remains a nice journal , overall ...

This one's on commission ...

The brief called for a few things :

- purple colour

- leather corners

- something about the spice islands

- monogram initials

- and others

I had crafted a purple journal long time ago.

did an experiment on staining them covers with ink...

I was wondering what leather corners to use....

The dark chestnut brown leather somehow couldnt contrast enough with the dark purple.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20122%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Purple/Journal%20122D%20GEMATEX%20-%20Dark%20Purple%20Spice%20Islands/005.jpg

Here is an attempt using the reverse side of the leather...

Somehow it looked better ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20122%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Purple/Journal%20122D%20GEMATEX%20-%20Dark%20Purple%20Spice%20Islands/004.jpg

Found a small map of he spice islands ...

trying to visualize the colours , hues involved ...

It looked good ..

Next came the preparation of the leather corners ...

Tedious !!!

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20122%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Purple/Journal%20122D%20GEMATEX%20-%20Dark%20Purple%20Spice%20Islands/010-1.jpg

Done

Leathers installed ...

I like this reverse side of the leather.

Looks like its nicer

A check for alignment

This time I used low tack masking tape to help in positioning the map exactly intop position.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20122%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Purple/Journal%20122D%20GEMATEX%20-%20Dark%20Purple%20Spice%20Islands/029.jpg

The map pasted into position ...

This round, I gave a deeper recess to better protect the map ...

Next came the initials for the monogram ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20122%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Purple/Journal%20122D%20GEMATEX%20-%20Dark%20Purple%20Spice%20Islands/036.jpg

Tried out some compositions ..

Decided this was better ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20122%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Purple/Journal%20122D%20GEMATEX%20-%20Dark%20Purple%20Spice%20Islands/042.jpg

Glued into position ....

This part is always a hairy moment ...

but it turned out ok ...

I decided on yellow stitches ....

I felt it was a refreshing hue amidst subdued colours ...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
