This is the third in a co-ordinated set.

For the one with the orange tag, I removed the previous green stitches and restitched with rice coloured stitches instead.

I decided on rice coloured stitches for colour co-ordination

This journal is a mid size journal.

Its 5x7 inches

The pen sleeve also happens to be exactly 7 inches in length

Next is the leather jacket which is supposed to be custom fitted to this set of journals.

Its a real challenge to me , being unfamiliar with leathercraft..

Wonder how will I ever get it done... :(

A lovely set of journals...fantastic craftsmanship and creative solutions.

I think you underestimate your abilities with the leather jacket/cover. It will look great as all of your creations do, and we will continue to admire on this thread. Thanks for sharing!

Nice! Something like that would be lovely for tucking a fp in a bag I'd think!

Yes ,

It's designed to be chucked into a bag or something,

Occupying smallest space,

And no flaps , buttons to snag or chafe

A simple sheath

Have you thought about how to finish your edges I have been experimenting with beeswax and elbow grease and a piece of hardwood to burnish.

Michael

Yes ,

I have a bottle of edge finisher , dark brown.

I didnt know there was such a hardwood burnisher until now

I have a Dremel tool though.

What does it look like? The end results of a hardwood burnisher?

Whats your best experience with edge finishing?

Appreciate any advice :)

My leather is soft and floppy.

Not the firm kinds (3mm or thicker?) we see commonly.

I don't know if it's edges can be burnished effectively.

I am also wondering whether a stitch groover can work on such a thin leather?

There are a number of ways to finish edges I am still learning about them myself but my understanding is :-

If you are using bottled edge finisher your edges need to be smooth before you start this is done with sandpaper once the finish is applied it can be sanded again and finished with wax.

The idea with the beeswax and burnishing tool is the wax is applied and rubbed with the piece of wood the rule seems that the burnisher needs to be harder than the item being burnished. The tool has a groove in it that allows the edges to fit inside. Canvas or denim can also be used.

The friction created melts the wax which fills all of the tiny gaps it can then be rubbed with a cloth to buff it up.

Your dremel should be able to help generate heat with a polishing pad or similar.

I use pieces of wood clamped either side of the floppy leather to aid with stitching and edge polishing I will take some pictures later if that will help.

I learned a lot from your posts on embossing so I am happy if I can return the favour.

Regards

Ok here are the pictures of my burnishing tool it can be made of anything smooth I have seen them made from plastic like a wheel that fits into a drill or dremel or even bone, mine is made from wood because it is what I had lying around.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
