Another Vp/capless Question

Tom Traubert

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Me again. Had my Capless for a couple of days now and I've got a question about its appearance.

The body is a dark yellow, stainless steel trim but the nib is gold. Is this combination normal? Also, the nib doesn't mention 18k anywhere, just Pilot <M> which looks legit and the number 612.

I'm sure everything's kosher because it writes like a dream, just wanted to check.

Quick bit of research leads me to realise that ehemem is right. It was advertised as such and I got over excited about a Capless for <£100.

But, it's a great nib anyway. On the fine side of medium so very good for marking students' work. Plus I love the dark yellow body.

Hi Tom,

The classifieds are an option if you fancy trying out a gold nib...it does bring you quite a bit closer to the RRP, but you've always got a "spare" in that case, too :)

Europe EF:

US based F:

Of course, if you're happy with what you've got, there's not necessarily any need to spend the extra!

OP, you probably have the "special alloy" nib that is sold (I think) only in Japan. If you like the way it performs, you really are missing nothing by having steel instead of gold.

Having gone back to the listing, you're absolutely right. The same seller advertises other pens with the 18k nib, so it's all above board. The 18k pens are also about £20 more expensive, which makes sense.

I think I just went OMG! Capless! £43! And then didn't read anything else.

I may buy a gold nib unit one day. Or not - this one's a nice nib.

A 14K or 18K nib is nice, but it isn't necessary to have a gold nib for the pen to write very well. A gold nib will last longer, but a non-gold nib can be very good, depending on the alloy used. For instance, I've never seen a Sheaffer Palladium silver nib corroded through, and some "special alloy" nibs have held up just as well. The important thing is the tipping material.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
