Sorry, what is ESSRI? I like this dark blue-black.

Ahh, found it - Ecclesiastical Stationery Supplies Registrars Ink. Not sure I want to mess with IG yet.

Jim, wait until you see what Tas posts.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

OK, mint tea to hand and off we go . . .

(I'm obsessed with blue blacks   )

My fave, I think, is Akkerman's No10. Solid, reliable and so obviously a fountain pen ink when seen on paper.

ESSRI, a close second. Almost identical in colour but sometimes a little dry in some of my pens.

ORGANICS STUDIO BLUE MERLE - I'm calling this blue black, cos it's not blue and it's not grey :P . Beautiful ink & colour reminiscent of times past yet somehow still modern.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_blue_merle_swatch.jpg

SAILOR KOBE 46 MUSEUM GREY - I'm going to call this one a blue black too for the same reasons. Easily one of my favourite sketching inks (thanks so much migo984 for introducing and sourcing it for me)

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_sailor_kobe_46_museum_grey_swatch.jpg

DIAMINE DENIM - To be honest I use this in mixes more than on it's own. I feel it lacks a certain something but can never put my finger on it.

DIAMINE BLUE BLACK - I think this was my first blue black and partly blame my disappointment with it for my tail chasing search for THE blue black.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_diamine_blue_black.jpg

DIAMINE ECLIPSE - A yummy dark almost black ink that splits into blues and a little purple when washed over.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_diamine_eclipse_swatch.jpg

HERO 232 - A newcomer to my stable and a great value, hard working no nonsense ink. Much underrated I think.

IROSHIZUKU SHIN KAI - Hmm. I bought two samples as the first didn't quite convince me (neither has the second) Whilst it's an ABSOLUTE JOY to write with the colour and especially the wash leaves me cold. Sorry.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_iroshizuku_shin_kai_swatch.jpg

KWZI IG BLUE 4 - A stunning blue black full of character. This newcomer to the scene has what I feel to be the talent to become the next Noodler's.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_KWZI_ig_blue_4_swatch.jpg

KWZI IG BLUE BLACK - Love using this ink and never tire of it's colour.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_KWZI_ig_blue_black_swatch.jpg

MONT BLANC MIDNIGHT BLUE (NEW FORMULA) - Initially disappointed, I have grown to really like this ink and how it performs.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_mbmb_new_formula.jpg

MONT BLANC MIDNIGHT BLUE (ORIGINAL FORMULA) - This is one of may all time favourite inks. There's something about it, there really is.

* new simply means new bottle not new formula.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_mbmb_original_paris.jpg

MONTEVERDE BLUE BLACK - This is one hell of an ink and I wished it were recommended more often. Easy to use, lovely to look at and a little complex in it's colour too.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_monteverde_blue_black_swatch.jpg

PELIKAN 4001 BLUE BLACK - This much hailed ink has mostly left me cold (although of late I'm enjoying it in an old Pelikan M30). Often really dry and pale and whilst I normally love that "chalky" look in my inks this is missing that certain something for me. Again, sorry.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_pelikan_blue_black_swatch.jpg

SHEAFFER BLUE BLACK - Another ink I wished I could like more but always feel there's something missing when looking at it.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_sheaffers_blue_black_swatch.jpg

PILOT BLUE BLACK (PARALLEL PEN CARTRIDGE) - This is a corker of an ink, look at it! Sadly only available in cartridge form. Shame :(

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_pilot_blue_black_cartridge_swatch.jpg

PILOT BLUE BLACK (BOTTLE) - Meh. Great qualities, ish colour. (I think it's a mislabelled blue really)

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_pilot_blue_black_swatch.jpg

ROHRER & KLINGNER LEIPZIGER SCHWARZ - Another near black beauty that splits into a mirriad of colours when washed over. Cor . . .

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_rk_leipziger_shcwarz_swatch.jpg

SAILOR BLUE BLACK - Hmm, not sure what's up with this swatch. Pretty sure this perfectly behaved ink looks a lot darker than this normally.

* Just made another swatch and yes, whilst this ink goes down dark, it dries up a lot lighter.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_sailor_blue_black_swatch.jpg

SAILOR KOBE 46 MUSEUM GREY - I'm going to call this one a blue black too for the same reasons. Easily one of my favourite sketching inks (thanks so much migo984 for introducing and sourcing it for me)

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_sailor_kobe_46_museum_grey_swatch.jpg

PELIKAN EDELSTEIN TANZANITE - This grew on me and looks and works really well in fine nibbed pens where it's colour is allowed to show rather than in broad nibs where it looks almost black.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_tanzanite_swatch.jpg

NOODLER"S VAN GOGH STARRY NIGHT - Soon to be made available again. I suggest everyone stocks up this is to me a near perfect blue black. LOVE IT.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_starry_night_swatch.jpg

PARKER QUINK SUPER BLACK (VINTAGE) - Sorry to include this but it does pop up on ebay sometimes and is a FANTASTIC blue black.

http://www.taskyprianou.com/fpn_vintage_quink_super_black_swatch.jpg

Off to bed now and my sincere apologies if I've bored you all with my rather sad collection of Blue Blacks.

Really? Denim is my calm, soothing fallback color. I use it more when stressed.

I know, like I said, I can't quite put my finger on it. Whenever I use it, it never shades and I think that bothers me too.

I can tell my thoughts are going to irritate a few members but Jim did ask . . .

No, no, I didn't mean it like that. I was just surprised and interested. (While I know *intellectually* that other people have different likes and dislikes, I still sort of expect people to have the same experiences as I do. It's probably some psychological flaw.)

And I agree with most of your evaluations - Denim just stuck out because I really do enjoy it.

The Pelikan Blue-Black looks fantastic washed. I love how the wash is gray rather than blue. Interesting that my two favorites from your list (Shin-kai is the other) are not ones you cared for.

That's life huh.

You won't believe how hard I've tried to like Pelikan BB and how much I love how Shin Kai looks on other people's posts.

As long as any of the swatches have proved useful that's all really care about . . . :)

Here is a sample of Rohrer & Klingner Verdegris. Pardon the poor handwriting. Paper is Rhodia.

Just a couple of items to add to this excellent demonstration of blue-blacks!

+sighs wistfully+ This might be my favorite swatches TOD yet. For me, of the ones I've tried, the Pilot cartridge blue black doesn't do it for me. I bought a Pilot Petit with it (another that doesn't get recommended enough) and while I like dark colors, I think in this pen, there's a lack of shading that I really miss. Now I can't wait to try my sample of Sailor Blue Grey though.

Tas, I think I've told you once before (and I know others have), but I LOVE your washes. Someday when I have more time I'd like to learn how to draw with a fountain pen and do washes.

My pens: Penny the Penmanship, Dot the Metropolitan, Pallas the Parallel, Neoma the High Ace Neo, Petra the Petit1, Calliope the Kakuno (Also, a Sheaffer No-Nonsense)

My bottles of ink: Sailor Epinard & Ultramarine; Mysterious Blue (Wishlist: Oku Yama)

Thank you. :)

Learning is easy. Pick up a pen, scribble away, wash over your scribbles. Repeat.

They don't have to be any good as long as they make you feel happy.

I was photographing a life drawing class yesterday and was completely blown away by the talent out there. So many different styles, techniques and abilities but all of the artists were having fun.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
