Saturday's chilly trip up to Portobello road wasn't bad for such a cold day!

I sold a few vintage pens, to tourists mainly, one of whom had come all the way from Australia, and had been told that he 'must' go and visit Henry at Portobello Market if he was able to on a Saturday, [he is a member of a local pen collector's club!] So, it was nice to think that I was that famous, if only locally! He bought two Conway Stewart pens, and went away very happy!

I was only offered three vintage pens to buy during the coarse of the day, Two Parker 51's, and a Bronze Striped medium size Sheaffer Balance pen with a military clip, and a feather-lite nib, in very good condition, which is now fully restored and is 'in stock'!

All in all, it was a good day!

Good morning BBS!

I can't honestly say whether I could do that sort of repair, but I would like to see it first anyway before attempting to do it.

Possibly see you up there then!

Truffle Finder. :) :D

I'm sure I will see you there at some point, but alas not with a cracked wood Omas - I wasn't going to pay that much!

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

I'm not exactly what one would call a 'fan' of New Year's Eve, [being an Alcoholic, in recovery!] but I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone who pops in here, a very Happy New Year.

Ever since this thread was started by GWP quite a few years ago, I don't think that anyone thought that it would run for as long as it has done, or that it would continue to be of interest to fountain pen lovers, as it has done. For me anyway, it has been a very enlightening journey, as I really did not realise [when this thread first started, a few years ago] that so many people knew or indeed 'had' heard of me!

Happy New Year!

Truffle Finder, [AKA Henry Simpole!] :P :)

Does anyone on here know much about a man called Du Clos?

Someone has sent one to me which needs major surgery doing to it!

Just thought that I'd ask, as I'd never heard of him. Does anyone know when the man died?

Hi there!

Today at portobello road, it seemed that most of my customers were out and about looking for Parker 51's! It is quite understandable really [they are exceptionally good working fountain pens], but not necessarily all on the same day!

I did sell some other types of pens during the course of the day, and despite there being 'planned engineering works going on on the Central Line, the rain held off, and the journey wasn't too disrupted.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
