Sanyal Soumitra's Mini Indian Pen Reviews & Ink Tests

A fully restored Mhatre Writer ED pen with original nib, made by mix & match from the scrap lot. One shop at Flora Fountain had asked me Rs 10000/- for this pen-crazy, but true!! Definitely I did not buy that fancy priced pen. For this one I had paid about Rs 50 for the various scrap pens apiece in this lot and later a little bit of mix and match!

This pen is really from an older pen lot, it took a little time to get the clip spring fitted from the shop.

Love to see all these different pens. This one in particular has that 'cuteness' I appreciate. Thanks for sharing the results.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I want an advise from Mr Sanyal.

I use a REYNOLDS SIGNATURE (Indian) pen ; converter of which got deformed recently , and it does not enter the barrel. However Ink Cartridges can be inserted. I wanted to use this pen in Eyedropper mode but there is a leakage from the Ring joint at the bottom of the pen.

Hi many people advise to use a thin smear of silicone grease in the threads to use a converter type pen as an eye dropper pen. I would not be knowing where to buy silicone grease. But using simple petroleum jelly ie Vaseline is easy remedy... not official method though. There would be no damage in my observation but a bit thicker grease is better. The thread pitch is perhaps more on converter pens for quick opening. Pls try a little Vaseline and let me know.

That's beautiful! What are the filler options?

ED Cartridge and converter. ASA pens call it 3-in-1 system.

 This is a unique hobby. Its good that before all fountain pens rested in museums some

people like you and many here restored the Fountain pen fever.

Hope Indians pens become artistic looking and can compete with chinese pens in

the world market in cheap price . Even unknown chinese pens like Dikwaen offers

so much artistry look and good performance nowadays.

You can buy it from hardware store. I bought one tube @40/- from nearby hardware store. Made by m-seal. Also take your pen to store to hardware store if you need an o-ring.

I am using Pilot 78G in eyedropper mode using silicone grease.

Thank you for sharing your reviews! I have a friend who travels home to Bangalore, India (from Green Bay, WI of all places!) once or twice a year, and I'll have her keep an eye out for pen bargains!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
