Custom 74 Nib Feedback

Just bought a new Custom 74. The softer nib is taking some getting used to, it is not bad though. What I am wondering is: Does yours have any feedback on the nib? I have read several reviews that talk about the nib being smooth, but mine seems a little scratchy. Not digging into the paper scratchy just not as buttery smooth as I thought with this pen. Feels kinda like I am writing with a pencil at times. Thoughts?

Do you think you might be applying too much pressure and spreading the tines while writing, causing the inside edge of the tines to ''catch'' onto the paper and give off feedback? Maybe try to lighten it a little. If it's still feeling a bit ''rough'' have a look at it under a loupe and check the tines are properly aligned.

Thanks. I write with light pressure, so I don't think it is the first one you mentioned. I'll have a look at the tines. Should be getting a loupe in this week. I ordered one from Goulet Pens. What I currently have is not working well.

If you can't wait to get your loupe, you can try another method to see if they are misaligned;

 

Holding the pen as you normally would, make a few side strokes, and you might be able to feel when it "scratches". For example, when going from left to right or vice versa.

 

If it feels "scratchy" when going from left to right, gently pull up the left tine. If it feels like it is "scratchy" from right to left, do the same to the right tine.

 

Repeat this process until if feels better. If you can't get it perfect, just wait for your loupe.

What size is the nib? An extra fine will have more feedback than a medium sized nib.

I still believe he has a problem, because he said it is a "little scratchy''. No nib should be scratchy, not even an EF.

I have done what you suggested Tom but can't seem to get it perfect. I am going to wait for the loupe. It should be delivered tomorrow as long as USPS isn't backed up.

 

I will let you guys know what I find out.

Thanks for the pictures. After viewing under the loupe, it looks fine. Just like the pictures above.

 

I also purchased some Mylar paper. I used that some and it has smoothed it out pretty well. I may do a little more work with the Mylar to get it buttery smooth like I want but it is writing well now. Just a hint of feedback, which I don't mind. Keep me from skating all over the page.

Hello, I wanted to ask a question about the Fine Custom 74. How much pressure are you having to apply to write. It feels to me as if I am needing wayyy to much pressure for it to write.

 

If I do a 'light' writing test, holding it from the very back of the pen (where it would be posted), and glide it across the paper, the pen does not put any ink on the paper. Is this normal? Are the feed/tines too close together? My hands gets sore just from writing with it for 5 minutes compared to my Pilot Metro in Fine as well.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I feel as if I bought a dud because of so many issues. It will not write (hardly) if I do upstroke either....

I don't put much pressure on the pen at all when I write. Your tines may be too close together if you are not getting enough flow to lay down a line with light pressure. I have had to adjust mine. I opened them up a little. Now the pen writes much better. You also may try a wetter ink before messing with the tines. But if the wetter ink doesn't work, open the tines up a bit and see what happens.
