Iroshizuku - Fuyu-gaki (Winter Persimmon) - CRV - Group Review - 2015-01

The Iroshizuku Group Review color for January 2015 is Fuyu-gaki ”Winter Persimmon”. It is a vibrant, saturated orange, closely resembling the flesh of the sweet fruit it is named for.

Please post your reviews and scans of the ink in this thread.
If you want to a partner for a Co-Razy View (CRV) of this ink, please write it up and mail it to Lou Erickson. (PM for the address.) If you want to do a Co-Razy View on your own, please do! Other reviews are welcome, too.
NOTE: I have a new address as of January! If you have sent me things in the past, please PM for the new address - the old one will stop forwarding eventually.
You can look at the full description of the Iroshizuku Group Review to see how this should work and what we’re doing.

Thanks to Rachel Goulet, who gave permission to me to use their beautiful product photo and swab.
More thanks to Amberlea who gives so much of her time to herding these inky kittens.
Please PM me with any questions. I look forward to seeing everyone's results! :)

Got a sample of this ink to prove to myself that I don't need a bottle. Hahaha. I'm not sure if that's going to work the way I intended it to!

So this is half of a CRV, which I will happily mail out to Lou when he PMs me back. :)

Now that I'm back in town, I've PM'd chewytulip back, yay!

I've also finally got a clean pen and can load it with ink. A nice wet, shockingly broad Triumph nib Snorkel. I'm not seeing any sheen, but shading is clear. Mmm, lovely.

I tried to write a bunch with the pen I drew the header picture with (a Pelikan M200 with a Binder stub) but it came out very saturated anyway. I was writing slowly so as to be neat, and I didn't get much shading. Writing more normally, I see lots. Very fun! Maybe I won't have to get a bottle of Apache Sunset now...

I got a new Pelikan M200 with a tipped italic nib, and this ink went right in! I feel like Fuyu-Gaki really needs such a wet broad nib to show well.

Review scan coming soon.

My other pen is a Montblanc and...

Lou, I already did my review of F-G, I just did a review of Sailor Apricot, I can mail those 1/2 sheets to you for a nice comparison.

I've had a lot of fun with this ink-of-the-month comparison, and Fuyu-Gaki brings a bright note to January's gray doldrums. My test pen was a Pelikan M200 with a wonderful, tipped italic nib.

My summary:

16109222540_c5bf6ef31e_z.jpg

I can see that in other people's scans and tests, Fuyu-Gaki appears darker and more pink!

The bottom line is, I like this coral-y ink more than I did the Yu-Yake in a previous test (though that ink did not have any problems with flow or cleanup). Fuyu-Gaki is a cheerful, happy, well-behaved color. I don't think I'd go for a bottle, however, because it's fairly close to Lamy's Neon Coral, which I already have. And my ink shelf's running out of room.

My other pen is a Montblanc and...

My other blog is a tumblr.

I have a couple of CRVs folks sent, which I'll reply to myself. As soon as I find the box they're in. And the ink. It's... in a box. Just like everything else I own.

I finally got an Internet connection working at home. :)

These are great, and I'm going to finish this one out late. If someone else has something to post, please do!

Oh I do... I'm just behind on this and Shin-Kai (ooops) but the next two inks have arrived for Feb/March so I'm going to get ahead of the game this weekend :)

I tried a sample of Fuyu-gaki awhile back. It was really a well behaved ink. But I hated the color. Although leaning towards red, it's still effectively orange. And I just couldn't bring myself to really get along with an orange ink, no matter how I tried. :(

Thanks for the reviews, I'm surprised how much I like the look of the ink once it dries. Definitely darker than the swabs I've seen.

Swabs generally give a very inaccurate result, IMO. I know a lot of people like seeing swabs, but the color you get out of a swab is often very different in saturation from what comes out of a pen nib.

Even dipping a pen isn't a perfect representation. I had to dip to write the introduction picture that's up for Fuyu-syogun - I may replace it - because my ink was lost in a moving box. I have found it (yay!) and could fill a pen. It's a lot more regular. I will put it in a better pen next time.

I found Fuyu-gaki too, so I can reply to the CRVs!

Initially, thought I would not like Fuyu-gaki; yet, found indeed I do like it well enough. The initial sample ink mostly spilled on a visible corner of my stark white bed mattress covering. Each day, no other choice, but to go from being horrified, acquiece and finally enjoy the dried, expanded orange/red ink blotch disrupting a pure white quilted existence.

Well, after seeing this review, believe it will not be my go to for every day use, but for a splash of something different. I have developed an appreciation. Now, I write with extra fine nibs exclusively. As a result, no doubt I will never get full effect of most inks, including this one. However, having learned to adapt, endure, enjoy, believe this is one I will like if only to brighten up a dreary winter's day or ordinary white mattress covering. :yikes:

Not sure if this has been suggested already but would a setting for localized regions or chapters in FPN be helpful? I don't know if there is a way to find local FPN members who would be nearby. I don't know if we want to be discoverable but a setting to know how many members are in 25, 50, or a 100 miles of each other might be helpful. We can create a regions specific network like Craigslist where people could use that to connect with nearby members, conduct in person sales, arrange FPN meetups

Hi again all, I forgot to tell y'all that I made the post about Sweden ink PIF. Most have probably found it long ago, but here's a link, anyway:

I read your blog post and all the replies with much interest. I'm a FP user in Australia. Been part of this forum for years but rarely post. I did come across your ink sharing thread and considered participation. For me it's not lack of interest but lack of time to play around with FP and inks. I'd feel bad to put my hand up for the box and just have it sit until gosh knows when...   I also think that the FP community in Australia is smaller, and I wonder how many in the community are

Even so, you'd end up with a fragmented list, and it becomes an O(N²) process for each prospective requestor to check what is available: effectively recreate the list of currently active servers (without any reliable up-to-date info upfront about the inks and number of samples on offer in the thread) from the sequential list of posts, which may be spread over two or even more pages, and then query each server independently to check what is currently on offer.   It comes down to not hav

If one wanted to do this, one could just use the "About Me" field which appears to be unlimited in size.  And if a bunch of people wanted to cooperate, the Member Title field (or signature) could be used to this end - "Ink Giver" (or some such) could be used by those with inks to give...  No software edits required.
