My Fave Home Made Blue Black - So Far . . .

Tas

Recommended Posts

Just been mucking about with mixing this morning and I have to shout eureka . . .

2 parts Diamine Eclipse

6 parts Private Reserve Gray Flannel (it's green bias used to counteract the slight purple in the Eclipse)

1 part Noodler's Lexington Grey (to add permanency)

I LOVE IT !!

:) :) :)

Hope you do too . . .

Very nice. Doesn't seem to go overly teal-ish the way many blue-blacks do.

OTOH, it *does* look a bit like Diamine Denim, and I'd be interested to see a side-by-side for criteria such as dry times and shading.

(swatches both made with the same dip pen)

I would say Denim is a dark blue.

Denim is a lot more saturated than my Eclipse mix and gives off a little red/magenta vibe in its washed away hue. It's less water resistant.

Side by side my mix looks more grey than Blue Black - it's not though. I like it . . .
Just thought I'd share. :)

We all love your work!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Ahhh, Blue Merle . . . I wished.

I have however accidentally and never to be repeated (as it's the rejects of many failed mixes all poured into one 50ml bottle) come quite close to both Blue Merle and Kobe 46 Museum Grey

1 part Diamine Prussian Blue

1 part Octopus Schwarz

3 parts CdA Infinity Grey (although I've a feeling Private Reserve Gray Flannel would be better)

= almost, almost the now extinct Blue Merle. Kind of. (I'll try the PRGF later and see if it's any closer)

Please do try with Grey Flannel... the best thing about mixes is that you can use more obtainable and cost effective means to get your favorite color... CdA is almost prohibitive in pricing... ;)

I really need to get on with some retouching instead of chasing my tail here with this Blue Merle obsession but I just tried it with Gray Flannel and Diamine Grey.

A little presumptuous with the name of the mix as I didn't quite nail it (Infinity Grey was a lot closer) but a lovely vintage blue has been born.

If anyone out there can be bothered, add your tuppence worth. It'd be nice to have a mixed up Blue Merle to replace our old trusty . . . :)

But you add it Grey Flannel AND Diamine Grey... you double the amount of grey. I am guessing that is why it looks darker.

I will try myself... I have Diamine Prussian Blue, and for greys I have.. Diamine Graphite (which it has a tinge of green) and Lexington Grey... I also have Levenger Smokey, Arsenic Grey and Sailor Maruzen Hatonabazu... but using those will defeat the purpose of of making it obtainable. ;)

I tried with just Diamine Grey, too dark.

I tried with just Gray Flannel, too blue.

I have an aversion to adding water, dries everything out.

I was going to use the gorgeous Lexington but it's a seriously dark grey and I also only have a teensy bit left.

Please don't use Levenger Smokey, Arsenic Grey or Sailor Maruzen Hatonabazu. It'll cost a small fortune if you get it wrong but more importantly, if it works it'll cost us an even bigger fortune :(

You have PhotoFlow?... You can add a tiny bit of water... and if you find it dry, add a tiny eeeeensy bit of PhotoFlow and you are cooking with gas again.

If you don't have PhotoFlow.. I will send you some. I will also send you some Lexington for you to play with.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
