Nakaya Blue Dragon

Took a period for me to come to peace with the idea of special piece and the longer to pick Aka, Heki or a blue/Ao ascending dragon. Finally opted for the Blue dragon. Went a little wild with white clip/ nib and then a new nib combo, we called the Medium Soft Stubby Left Oblique Flex.

First the pen is minimal and gorgeous and the dragon is absolutely spectacular. He is very camera shy and I am very camera challenged. But all the subtlety of color is very hard to explain great variation. And on this Naka Ai the effect of scales and shading is impossible to pick up, but can be seen in person in light.

Second the nib, well what are you going to say. John out did himself even on this pen. It is as vintage flex as vintage flex, has that undeniable feel. I am speechless at the beauty of this pen/

If you are thinking about a Nakaya dragon or AO and can bump your budget up a little, this is a great pen.

Now my pick I took multiples and none pick it up well. This might be the best, but it is ver light sensitive. I can tell you the dragon is very complex but blue and has a lot of depth and shading. As thew top layer starts to wear and fade the dragon will likely be more easily seen. It is a more teal blue with some of the copper patina of turquoise. But you won't see it from this pick. The other pics i took made it look green which it isn't.

Best.....

Wow, that's a lovely pen. Did it arrive just in time for Christmas or have you been holding onto it for a while?

Also, please provide more pictures; a writing sample and nib shot would be perfect.

I have the cigar version of this pen (of course sans fancy nib), and I agree that the subtle color variation is amazing. It is just not possible to capture the essence of the pen with an iphone camera. It has to be seen in person to see just how beautiful it is. I have a left oblique italic nib. Now I'm reallllly jealous of the flex that John put into your nib!!!

Very lovely. It is still new but with time the urushi will illuminate and your pen will become even more beautiful. Enjoy it !

I will try to get one tomorrow. The dragon is absolutely incredible and the finish so impressive. The problem is even if you go to John's site, it is so hard to capture the dragon. In person it is perfect simplicity yet beauty. There is more depth than pictures will capture, at least in this state at this time of the finish.

Thank you all and I will continue even tomorrow to try to get more pictures. I have taken a bunch, but even when I think I get the dragon, often it isn't there as it is real life......

To those considering this pen and finish, it is a great one.

Best,

Mike

A great pen that will look better with age and use. Something to look forward to as it ages. Congratulations.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
