Delhi - Super 5

Like most people I like novelties, especially when it comes to inks and fountain pens. You know - I've been looking for grail ink for three years and there's always chance it's still ahead of me :)

When I came across Super 5 inks mention on Goulet's site, I thought the bottles looked cool and - in a way - familiar.

The names of cities were cool as well. Colors looked really nice on swabs. My dear friend google helped me to investigate.

Super 5 inks are sold by Format-Darmstadt GmbH on papierlabor.de site. The company offers also calligraphy pen and converter and some papers.

This week I was given the whole set. I'm going to review it and post comparison of the full line. Soon.

The colors are really great. Honestly. They're also extremely waterproof. Delhi is the only orange I know (well there used to be Royal Aztec and Sun Never Sets by Suisher's but they're mno longer available) that doesn't loose color after being soaked in the water. And that's awesome for orange fan.

First ink to review will be Delhi. Great ink. Great color. Great shading. Waterproof.

Let's take a look at the bottle:

I believe many of you are thrilled to know there's new ink maker on the market offering great waterproof inks. Well, the thing is, there isn't.

Take a look at the other side of the bottle.

Yes - the ink is made by my second favourite ink maker - Rohrer & Klingner. Check their "regular" inks here.

That's good news. Really. They know what they're doing and you can expect good quality from R&K. The quality they indeed deliver.

So why Super5 inks are much more expensive than R&K inks. First of all - they're pigmented (I believe), then there need to be some margin for the distributor. At 20 euros / bottle yhey're not cheap. However unlike Caran d'Ache or Iroshizuku they offer not only more than satisfying quality, good flow and good lubrication but also added value of waterproofness and lightfastness.

Let's take a look at Delhi.

I do advice to check at least the sample of this ink. I'm impressed and although I like most of inks I'm not often impressed by them and their properties. This is good stuff. Pricey but good.

Thank you for the review! I love the shading and that this isn't an in your face bright orange. I've never tried a pigmented ink before so maybe this will be the first. (Just checked the goulet technical specs and you are correct; it is indeed pigmented.) Will add a sample to the next order :)

@wolverine1 - unhappily I've never even been to India :) However while writing reviews I try to look for texts in different languages, even these I don't know (as german or hindi). You can treat it like lorem ipsum bla, bla, bla :) The meaning is not important, the color and properties are.

I guess I have to invent a language of my own, so that I don't have to make two reviews - one for polish forum, one for FPN. For instance using different languages, peoems, prose, quotes makes the deal :)

  • 1 year later...

I am bumping this up! I was on the hunt for an orange ink, as I own no orange inks. This review is what settled it, I'm in love! I ordered a bottle and eagerly await the delivery!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
