Hurting Thumb After Extended Writing With My Pilot Vp

I own three VP's and love writing with them. They're just so ... practical. In my job as a consultant I do a lot of note taking/writing. Last week, after a busy day, my thumb felt a little sore: it felt almost as if a blister was beginning to form. I did not pay any attention to it and kind of wondered where this irritation (pain is too big a word) came from. On the second evening, my thumb was really hurting. Only then did I make the association with the writing I had been doing with the VP. I grabbed my pen and kind of checked out where this irritation came from. I found that it is not the clip that caused it, but the seam between the body and the nib section is the culprit. Mind you, I still love these pens, but for me they are not ideal for extended periods of intensive writing.

I have found that pens that have a metal grip section have that effect when writing extensively.

How hard were you holding it? Also how is your grip?

The VP is not a light pen. I guess my grip is pretty tight.

Does the nib on it write simply from dragging the nib across the paper? (ie: no pressure, just the weight of the pen itself resting on the page) Or do you have to give a little bit to get the flow going?

I have two medium and on fine nib. They are really smooth and do not need pressure to speak of.

Wow, you must be writing with a deathgrip. That's a very subtle seam.

Get a friend to take a picture of you writing with the pen. You should not have to hold any pen tightly regardless of the weight. Post the picture and let's see if there are suggestions that will help you.

I have no similar issues with my Lamy 2K, which has a metal section as well (and a less smooth nib).

Anyone having similar problems with the VP?

While I love my VP for quick note taking and short writting sessions, I really don't care to write with it for extended periods because of it's girth and weight. I'm thinking of replacing it with a Decimo since they're lighter and smaller.

I haven't owned a VP long enough to really note a problem. I also own a Lamy 2000, and the L2K kind of annoys me with the cold steel grip. But the main difference between the two is the VP has a clip there so it could be a matter of how you're holding the pen just enough that it would affect your thumb versus a completely rounded section with no obstruction.

Today I applied a bit less pressure and regularly changed my grip a little bit. That seems to have helped! Thx everybody!
