Vert Olive - J. Herbin

J. Herbin was established in 1670.

M. Herbin was a sailor, and from his many journeys to India he brought back to Paris formulas for manufacturing sealing wax. His special lacquer formula improved the quality of the seals in adhesion and neatness, helping him to become famous throughout the kingdom.

J. Herbin is also the oldest name in ink production in the world.

By 1700, the company was producing “l’Encre de la Tete Noire,” followed by “Perle des Encres,” (The Jewel of Inks) and “l’Encre des Vaisseaux” (The Ink of Ships).

J. Herbin made ink for Louis XIV, and a black ink for the sole use of Victor Hugo, author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables. These formulas still reside in our company headquarters in Paris.

That's what J. Herbin says about themselves. They've been on the market for quite some time and I guess they now what they're doing.

Vert Olive is quite nice.

I love the colour of this ink...

Not for daily use btw

Das leben ist wie ein Perpetuum Mobile mit ein Mangel..... Immer im Bewegung jedoch nicht unendlich. (life is like a troubled Perpetuum Mobile ever moving but not for ever)

Tricked throughout the centuries...

For centuries people had been tricked by kings & "religion-alism"

In the 20th century people got tricked by communism

Today people get tricked by (neo)capitalism :)

I didn't expect the gray in the chromatography. Thank you for doing all of these.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have a soft spot for J. Herbin, since most of the music I play is from 17th C France. They do make some beautiful colors. Vert Olive isn't one I prefer, but there are many other nice ones--I particularly like Êclat de Saphir and Lie de Thé.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

  • 1 year later...

I've been writing with Vert Olive this week. As it was in use anyway I decided to do some additional scans and add them here, especially that I'm not really happy with how the original review looks like. I think now the end result is much closer to reality.

Since my use of pens & ink is exclusively for my pleasure, I love this ink & don't care about it's impracticality. I choose inks for correspondence that ARE legible, but just use these inks for my own enjoyment. I have a strong affinity for the yellow leaning greens, yet also enjoy other greens; I think I am merely in awe of the many inks I discover, since 50 years ago, not imagining them, when I first used a fountain pen.

It was a pleasure to see this ink showcased again today, Thank you.

I tried this ink a few months back and thought it was nice. Unfortunately it seems to fade very easily, even when kept in a drawer.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
