What would be a nice set of Estie nibs to start with. I'm thinking of a set with may be 5-10 nibs, from fine to broad, flexible, stub, etc...

I'd say any starter pack should have at least the following (note most available in 2xxx or 9xxx flavors, attention being made to those nibs generally easily available):

Basic starters:

2668/9668 medium

2314/9314-F/M/B Relief nibs, your pick of width

9556 Fine (in this case, I like the 9556 better than the 2556, but than I generally don't like fine nibs)

2968/9968 broad

2284/9284 Signature stub, sometimes called a music nib (only two tines)

9128 the ONLY decent flex estie nib (IMO), ok the 9788 is ok too.

Optional:

9550 If you HAVE to have a XF

9460 Firm Manifold medium if you need something firmer than a 9668

For the more exotic and more expensive:

3668 sunburst style medium

1314 Flexible stub (only available in this version)

8668 Paladium silver medium

8440 XF two tone sunburst

Relief [Fine|Medium|Broad] Osmiridium Tipped

2312/9312 Italic

3312/3314 GP series

That should about cover it. :)

Brian, at today's prices -- how much would even that basic starter pack cost? And where could one get these nibs? I've not been able to find a reliable source for Estie nibs anywhere except on Ebay, where they can cost $10-$25 each.

Hello Brian, this is my first post in the Esterbrook Forum.

Thanks for the question, Denis. I've got a copy of the pic of all the nibs, but there's just so many to choose from. (You can only go so far reading about all the good stuff that's been said about esties and not actually getting one, so i'll be trying to get one soon.) I'll be coming back here for advice when i do get it.

You can't always get what you want... but if you try sometimes... you just might find... you'll get what you need...

There are two guys at the Raleigh Pen Show who are big "Estie Dudes." I'm sure both of them can help with nibs. I met Frank Tedesco today, but I have already misplaced his business card. I'll meet the 2nd feloow tomorrow. I'm confirm that these fellows can help. Later this weekend I'll post their contact. Ron

Elaine-

I picked the initial bunch just based on ease of availability. 2668/9668's are fairly common and are usually $10-15 each. x314-F/M/B's run $15-20 depending on which one, 2284's are easily $20, 9128/9788 - $15 each or more, 9556, $5-10, 2968/9968 - $12-18 or so. Again, these are only estimates at retail. If you really want to find some of the more expensive ones, just hunt down the nib by buying the pen too. Bonus might be you can sell the pen to pay for the nib.

Elaine, I've recently found several sellers of Estie nibs on eBay. One, williamsburg auctions, found an entire display case of nibs. He lists an email address if you're looking for something special.

ebay@williamsburgauctions.com with your request and he will post a Buy it now auction for you.

Pendomonium sells a bunch for $10-20 each. Try them at:

http://www.pendemonium.com/

And go to "Writing Instruments", then "Esterbrook". They currently are showing everything on the list except for the signature stub and the flexible nib. Also, they only have the 2314-F fine stub.

In fact, I may just pick up a 9461 fine manifold for my little green SJ checkbook pen - see if it is better for check carbons than the 9550.

Also, I have no affiliation with Pendomonium, other than being a satisfied customer.

I did contact this fellow awhile back--we exchanged several e-mails, but he never did put up the buy-it-now auction for me. Maybe someone else will have better luck.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
