I have three Lamy pens - charcoal and gloss black Safaris and a Graphite Al-Star - making a set of stubs for practicing my italic hand. The trouble is: they dry out so fast, it's a waste of ink to keep them inked unless I write absolutely everyday and am guaranteed to write them out before they evaporate in our mega-dry climate. I've experimented with both cartridge and converter and both are hopeless here for 6 months of the year.

So today I won't be using them, but will be cleaning out dried ink - all three - after sitting for just a few weeks because life got in the way. I won't refill them until the end of summer. I would love to be able to keep them inked all the time and it definitely puts me off buying another.

It's all about the greys...

Ruthenium LX (M) - Lamy Blue

This is the second LX I have owned, and I just love the nibs on these things.

A few weeks ago, I was on the verge of ordering a brand new CP1 pencil and ballpoint set for my "matched set" collection, and it occurred to me that I should check eBay.

Found this trio, with the fountain pen, for the same price as the BP/MP would have been at Goldspot. And they're practically brand new condition.

Inked up the CP1 (M) with Diamine Blue Black, and it's a great writer. Very slim but with a bit of weight - it's like a higher-end Parker Vector.

I'd say that's about right. A very dark gray, with silver clips - and a black end on the FP.

I think the current ones are all black barrel. These may be from the 90s.

  • 3 weeks later...

A new Lamy Al-Star with a really smooth extra-fine nib.  It is the yellow green lime one but I got it super cheap on eBay.

I am using my Studio in Glacier today (with a standard Lamy Blue cartridge).

For those of you with Lamy Glacier pens: do you see it as more blue, or more gray? At first I though it was definitely blue with a gray undertone (and I still think that in indirect daylight), but I notice under cooler artificial lighting, it looks way more gray. Maybe that's to be expected.

By the way, the lamy logo FP is a really nice pen, it even has a spring loaded clip and I love everything on this pen except one thing, the body will screw easily while you're writing.

Apart from the ones I have just suggested, I also recommend lamy Tipo. They're cheap, cleverly designed and they accept pilot g2 refills! One of my favourite refills. However, the downside is, the clip will eventually break as you use it. Mine was broken in 3 months. (I use it everyday and without much caring; I used 6 g2 refills in it)

In all, but natural light, it looks grey to me.
