Noodler's Gruene Cactus. This is available in Eel (lubricating) and non-Eel versions. This is the non-Eel version. This sample is probably my favorite of the medium greens I have tried. It leans distinctly towards yellow and has a springtime feel.

Rohrer and Klingner Verdura - Another decent green. It is a fairly true medium green that leans a bit towards blue. On paper, it is similar to Noodler's Hunter Green, but the Noodler's inks are a little more saturated.

Thanks guys, I love green.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

For those who love Sailor's CIGAR but have had trouble getting a hold of it, here is a good alternative: Robert Oster BRONZE. The name suggests something more brown, but it comes off as much more green:

Good to know. Cigar is all about the sheen.

Blackstone Daintree Green.

This is on Fabriano paper, I think from a Cross ATX with a F nib. The scan is a touch brighter than the actual sample on paper, at least on my screen.

This is a beautiful green ink.

Monteverde Green. This is Monteverde's official brand color, offered as an ink.

I've just filled the pen, so no firm experience with this ink so far, but for fans of dark greens, it's worth considering. On my monitor, the scan comes out a little brighter than in real life.

Clairefontaine paper.

Hmm, looks like it could be similar to Irish Green or KWZI Green #3.

Hey Smudge, fancy doing some CRVs of these Monteverde new inks with me?

Sure thing! Contact me via PM and we'll set something up.

Perhaps due to the nearness of St. Patrick's Day, a broke down and ordered a couple of green inks.

The Vert Moyen by L'Artisan Pastellier is a moderately pleasant medium green:

But I definitely prefer the R & K Smaragdgrün. This is a color I can use comfortably:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
