Fair enough - good explanation. I can see that removing "problem children" is a tall order.

Many forums make any sort of chat function a totally separate level of authentication. Some of it is to avoid spamming. Some of it is just to keep the "pecking order". It is so darned hard in cyberspace to not err on either end of the spectrum. Who gets to play on which playground and with whom? And then the one or two kids who get let on the field wreak havoc and make it difficult for everyone who played nicely.

Okay, off my silly soapbox for now . . .

Err, it pops up just fine. But it is a "read only" scenario. When does it become "read/write"?

after you've been a member for 10 days :)

Hope this helps

Maybe the admin team can add to the top pinned post shoutbox also requires a 10 day membership.

I think it will cut out a lot of future questions.

Hello,

I just wanted to add to the previous posts that it would be helpful for new members to post the 10 day waiting period for shoutbox clearly in the help section. I have just spent the past hour sorting through information to figure out why I was in a read only state on shoutbox. I finally found the answer here. I admit to being a bit of a luddite in regards to using forums and social websites, but it seems that I am not the only one that was unable to figure it out easily.

Thanks for providing a really cool site to learn and share about fountain pens.

Carl

Made more visible in the first post in this topic.

Period is now even better: 7 days, same as use of the Upload function.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
