Either way I think you made a decent buy. There's probably people who would give $13 for just the ribbed jewel.

I may wind up selling it for parts after all, I've been consulting Pen Repair by Marshall & Oldfield and unfortunately, there is no glue or epoxy fix out there that can withstand the physical stress of the section inside the barrel. They recommend putting the pen on a lathe and carving out .005" of the barrel and gluing a .004" sheet of brass in there to give the barrel strength. I cannot do any kind of repair work like that - for one, I do not have a lathe and two, I don't have that kind of mechanical expertise.

 

So, I probably will be selling it for parts, if I don't keep it and glue it to my computer as a reminder not to be such a jackass when it comes to buying vintage pens. :D

Yeah, thanks. Okay, it's pretty clear that mine are probably all Coppers (but I'd have to check the case to be sure).

 

Oh, and in the house we grew up in, the appliances were definitely avocado. ;)

I am beginning to think one of the rarest Esties is a Root Beer Tranny.

 

I've looked for and never seen even one.

 

Some people think their Coppers are but they ain't.

 

I think I would go full Seal Team 6 if I ever Did see one.

Check out Post #9, I believe that is a picture of a copper, (lighter color), and the darker, more elusive root beer.

LamyOne: I know I've had amazing luck with vintage pens by getting them after someone who is good at and enjoys that kind of repair has goen through them. Several folks in this very forum often have pens to move along, and if you said, "I really would like a nice Estie that works." you might get a PM from one of the local Estie fairies.

 

I've also had extremely good luck with Peyton Street Pens.

 

Enjoy vintage. Let someone else restore them first. Then they're just lovely pens.

Yes, I agree. I think if one is going to delve into pens that are 60-80 years old, it behooves one to get them already restored - but you have to make sure the restorer knows what he's doing. :) I was trying to avoid Crypto's sad fate; figuring that if I do the work myself, I won't be beset by all the problems he encountered - following the old adage - "if you want something done right, do it yourself."

 

Restoring an Estie is not difficult when all of the planets are in alignment, :rolleyes: i.e., the nibs aren't bent, the barrels aren't cracked and stuff like that there. :D (I was able to successfully re-sac the copper J and get it writing again - that was nice. :) ).

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
