Hello,

Here is an example of my handwriting and a couple of questions:

That's a close up of my handwriting:

And for those of you, who can't help, but spent time reading my scribbles:

Your handwriting is very nice.smile.gif

I like italic nibs a lot as well. As to your question, an italic nib tends to be less smooth than the ordinary round nib due to its relatively sharp edges, as you describe. If you make it smoother, you are likely to loose the crispness of the line. Unless yours is unusable, I would leave it as it is.

Thanks, Born, I'm very pleased to hear a complement from you, however I've gor a lot to do to improve my handwriting (you set standards for me) smile.gif

And I pretty like line variation on my today's example.

Hi,

A nib can be smooth and at the same time have a good amount of line variation.

That's certainly true of my Deb Kinney Cursive Italic Pelikan Go - it's one of the smoothest nibs I have. How many years it took to reach that level you'd have to ask Ms Kinney, of course.

I wanted to tell of my interesting experience at the recent Raleigh Pen Show. I went to a seminar by Susan Wirth on handwriting and choosing nibs, and she looked at handwriting samples. She strongly recommended trying italic nibs, something I thought I would never deal with. I have been using fine nibs typically, and although I love writing with them, was surprised at my still poor handwriting. So, I tried some italic nibs and it's like a whole new writing world now.

My handwriting is more legible, and it's more fun to write and look at too. I really liked the Sheaffer No Nonsense pen with its Fine Italic nib. I don't know why she was charging $35-40 for these pens (which I subsequently learned seems quite high!), but given the time she spent with me, and the writing revolution it led me to, the cost was well worth that experience.

I have some old italic nibs (?Osmium) that fit my Esterbrooks, which now I can play with too.

I'm writing this to encourage others to consider trying italic nibs!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
