Just wondering (and learning) how do you know the Demi special, is it the Octanium nib? I think I read that the Demi specials didn't say special on them... I would like to find one at some point and am not sure how to distinguish them...

Thanks!-

The black measures 5 inches posted and the brown measures 5 1/2 inches posted. I can not swap caps as the cap on the black will not fit over the clutch ring of the brown 51. The black is a smaller Dia. thus would be a Demi. I still need to finnish the restoration on these two pens and the many Parkers I picked up the season of pen hunting.

I think the question is why do you think the Demi is a 'Special'?

Sorry my mistake the black is not a special. I was looking at the wrong filler unit.

It has been a long day.

Chaos. Must be overwrought from trying to corner the market on Jotters and 51s. It all runs together.

+1 on that. At least the local auctions have slowed down now that it is wintertime. Now it's time for cabin fever outings when I get stir crazy and need to go out on a Friday run pen hunting.

Even my computer is on double vision.. See what happens.

There's not much going on here in southeast Michigan on pen sales. I found many at yard sales in Florida, though. Parker51.com helped me figure out what I had. Back down to about three dozen now. I can manage those. This was a really good ride. Of all the 51s I found, only one didn't work right off, and that one took a while to put back together--it came in pieces. I no longer want any more pens, but I find the ones I have endlessly fascinating each time I pick one of them out of the tray to fill it and mess around with it.

You should pick a handful of your favie Aeros, sell the rest and get a Primo 1st year and call it a day.

Hard to imagine a better way to show where your pen head is than a 1st year FiddyOne.

Bruce in Ocala, Fl-somewhere over the rainbow there's a Cedar Blue 1st year calling for me it's Daddy...

Added another 51 to the collection today...this time a teal MK III. Nothing overly fancy, but it's my first MK III and the price was right.

That's a good idea. Sell the Carenes, 30 51s, Watermans, Sheaffers, Esterbrooks and I should be able to get a pretty good first year 51. Add about twenty Sonnets. I wonder what a good first year goes for. $3,000? I'll have to check this out.

They aren't That rare.

I'd think you could get a nice one for around 300. A really nice one for I'd guess 400-450.

I do have a DB P51 in Cordovan Brown, It has aged from a barrel marked from a 1946 to 1947 and finely a 1948. I had to replaced the barrel as it was all gouged and now it is a sweet pen with a matching pencil with gold filled caps.

You could get a nice red band for well under $3,000.

First year Cedar pricing would depend more on the cap than on the color of the pen. Bruce is in the right neighborhood, if you don't mind a common cap you should be able to find one for ~400. You want a 1st year Watermelon cap 3K might not cut it but you most likely get any color pen you want with it.

3K is a bit steep for a Red-Band unless there is something really special about it. Thinking about it more...I have one that is special...

I enjoy hunting for pens "in the wild," and have probably found more 51's than any other single model. Right now I have about 25. My favorite is a fantasy with an olive ripple hard rubber barrel I got from Howard Levy a few years back. It never fails to get admiring looks and comments when I use it.

Wow. I wanna go shopping where you shop....

Mostly around the Pittsburgh area I find Sheaffer school pens and Wearevers.... The two 51s I found in October were a fluke, because the last time I was in that particular antiques mall there was a whole lot of "not much". The best I ever saw before that was a Azure Pearl Vac with a mangled nib (the price of the pen itself wasn't bad but when I went on here to get information on nib repairs/replacements I would have had to talk the dealer down a whole lot further); and a Golden Pearl Vac (might have been a Maxima) at a place going out of business -- again, the price was *probably* pretty good, and if I had had the cash on me I might have talked the dealer down a bit further (but I got sidetracked and didn't call the place back in time and I don't know where (or if) that dealer moved on (of course everything the guy sold was *supposedly* "bakelite" -- and he might have been claiming that for the Vac as well...). Oh, and my first Snorkel (and I happened to stop in to the same place last weekend and again there was a whole lot of "not much" this time around).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
