Battle Of The Inks - Doppelgänger Edition

These are very similar, with the exception being the Cicada appears cooler (more blue).

Would love to get my hands on a sample vial of the MB Daniel Defoe---Anderson Pens is out of stock, though...Goulet doesn't offer it. Anyone else sell MB samples?

Why are there fourteen samples of dark plum ink on my desk? Because I still haven't found the right shade.

Is that a problem...??? : : : sigh : : :

Update: Great. Finally found one I love (Lamy Dark Lilac) but I can't get more. Ah, life in my inky world....

Ahhhhh...timing. Am in search of a green in that color range. The search goes on.

diamine safari, pilot iroshizuku ina-ho, and r&k alt-goldgrun - those are quite common, diamine wagner, de atramentis olive green and sahara grey, standardgraph shilfgrun - bit more difficult to find. i'm sure there are a lot more, those are just from the top of my head :).

btw, do we have an inky tod about swamp greens?

Thanks for the suggestions, Ereshkigal. Just received samples of Diamine Safari and DA Sahara Grey; the R&K Alt-Goldgrun is on my Goulet wish list (delaying until after the August Inkdrop to avoid duplicating colors).

Love the idea of an Inky TOD focussed on mossy/swampy greens.

KWZI IG Green Gold and regular Green Gold might fill the bill, too. Vanness Pens carries KWZI. No affiliation, etc.

That Maruzen Sepia is awesome, Cyber6. Haven't seen that before. Will have to try to mix it up

Thanks for starting this thread.

What a cool idea this is ! Unhappily I'm messy, this kind of order just isn't reachable for me. Well, it is, however I would have to put them in place every five minutes.

I find it hard (impossible) to believe you're "messy" or "unorganized". You have the most consistent ink reviews on the forum and I am forever grateful you take the time to do them and share them with us. I highly suspect you must store your stash in an 18 wheeler...surely not enough room in your home. ;-)

Not exactly alike, but similar enough that I won't be inking them again at the same time.

I don't have any fancy cards (yet), but when I saw this thread I thought of a comparison I did for someone a while back... (forget about the Magenta & Red Dragon, just look at the others).

I inked up a new Lamy Logo with a sample of Caran d'Ache Vibrant Green. I started writing and realized it looks a lot like Omas Green. (That ink was in a Jetpens Chibi, so the nib produces a finer line.)

What do you think? (Hopefully I get the images uploaded properly.)

I do too. It would be worth it to do the chromotography on these two to see if they are made up of similar colors.

Interesting thought - does the component that makes sheen show up in chromatography, or only when you apply quantum?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
