Battle Of The Inks - Doppelgänger Edition

Nicely done! AS has a bit of depth and saturation that AO seems to be missing in most pens, but I love them both —in different ways. I happen to have Autumn Oak in a vintage Waterman with super soft flex nib, and the ink looks almost as freakin' amazing as AS —just a touch more golden brown. Gorge.

Those two are very similar (AS and AO). Just read the thread about hoping that Sailor re-issues Rikyu Cha. I wonder if there is a doppelgänger for it. (I came late to this thread a few weeks ago (or whenever) and don't remember if Rikyu Cha has been matched.) Great thread, btw.

From the photos it's seems Sailor Cigar is quite close to Rikyu Cha. But I've never had Rikyu Cha to be sure of the similarity.

Thanks to Cyber6 for suggesting Diamine Pansy as a substitute for Montblanc Lavender.

A pal took pity on me & donated his almost full bottle of Montblanc Lavender. At least I can fall back on Pansy once its finished.

Pansy stained my M200 barrel and a converter. And words written in Pansy completed disappeared after a month in sunlight.

That is unacceptable. Did you get the stains out the M200?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Interesting. Just looking at Pansy in the bottle, you can tell that it's super saturated, and even a little thick. But to fade so quickly, as Amber says, "unacceptable"!

I've finally got hold of some Apache Sunset - I'm in the UK and it's not easy - and it's nice to know there's something similar out there. Noodler's AS is great in my big Montblanc and it'll be interesting to see what the Diamine's like.

N.B. it is very difficult to wash AS out of any pen. I wish I could have told you that. It is tenacious. A lot of patience will overcome it. XOXOXO, it is one of my favorites. It is astounding.

Does anyone have a substitute for Diamine Ancient Copper? Love the colour but it's too wet for the pen! ><

From the land where palm trees grow,
And I want before I die
My soul's verses to bestow.

All those moments will be lost in time.

Not quite a doppelgänger, but I substituted Ancient Copper for Terracotta in my Vac 700 a while ago and have never looked back. . .

Awesome thread!! I am sorry that I cannot contribute. I have no Parker Penman Sapphir left to make a side by side comparison with its look alike, Private Reserve DC supershow blue.** I just spent a wonderful 20 minutes looking at wonderful inks. Amazing scans, by the way! All the more since one can see the differences between these lookalikes. Thanks!!

** just found the hudge comparison of PPS ... Wow!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
