Battle Of The Inks - Doppelgänger Edition

In the course of doing my review of Standardgraph Elder Blue, I realised it was very, very similar to the Waterman Purple I also had.

The pens are a little different – the J Herbin is a touch finer, and doesn't have the "roundedness" feeling of the Vector.

To my eyes, the Waterman is a half-shade darker and a teensy bit less red, but honestly I struggle to tell the difference in real life and on my scanner, even this extremely subtle difference isn't apparent.

What is very clear is how much difference the paper makes to dry-time smear tests. Both these inks dry very well on absorbent paper like a copier paper. But I pulled out my decades-old box of Basildon Bond letter-writing paper and the dry times were much longer and the spread much less (I used the back of the paper so you didn't have to look at the overbearing border and crown – there's a reason it's taken me decades to use what was a Christmas gift from a relative, I think.

They do look very much alike.

For an expensive replica of "Montblanc - Irish Green":

5ml "Iroshizuku - Shin Ryoku"

2 drops "J.Herbin - Perle Noir"

Looks the same, shades the same...the only difference is the wash.
Add any water to this and the blue comes right out everywhere...unlike the real ink which is all-green, through-and-through.

Not sure if these have been mentioned before (this is now a huge topic).

Sailor (Jentle) Blue <> Diamine Majestic Blue

Top: Sailor (Jentle) Blue with its characteristic red sheen, which Diamine Majestic Blue also offers. Below: a square and a smear (side by side) of Majestic Blue and (Jentle) Blue. I’ll leave it to y’all to tell which is which 😉.

iroshizuku shin-kai <> P4001 blue-black

See this discussion. Both inks change colour to some extent after drying, with some of the blue changing to grey-ish. Note that there seem to be some batches of P4001 Blue-Black out there that differ in colour from what it should be, i.e. rather dull-grey-ish instead blue-black-ish.

Herbin Vert Atlantide (base colour) <> Diamine Green Umber

Without the shimmers, these two inks look quite similar.

They’re close but not identical. Put a page of written text side by side and you’ll see it.  Vert Atlantide is slighty more… ethereal, for lack of a better word. It’s a slight bit more silvery (even without the shimmer) and mysterious. Otherwise they’re very, very close (apart from the shimmer) and without a direct A/B comparison it would be tough to say which is which.

How about Diamine Winter Miracle for a Lamy Dark Lilac substitute.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

This post-50931-0-24350000-1420203276_thumb.jpgis one of the ways I compare colors. I have one rack for inks I have whole bottles of, and the others are ones I only have as the sample vials.

I bow to your rainbowy greatness!!!!  #goals  😃

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
