Battle Of The Inks - Doppelgänger Edition

Cyber6

Recommended Posts

Just found this thread (duh, where have I been?!)

Sorry for the poor quality of the samples, but they're my note cards for inks. I have them arranged by hue/shade. So I have the doppelgängers next to each other.

The ink I happen to have that comes close to Helianthus, is de Atramentis Apricot. Helianthus is just a shade brighter, and Apricot is, well, more apricot (like Spanish egg yolks which is deeeeeeep yellow):

I don't have Apricot ... and now I don't have to get it.. :P ... Your cards are AWESOME......THANKS!!!!!!

If you have any more doppelgangers.... please feel free to post. :D

Looked to see if anyone had done the poppy reds. I don't have beloved Corn Poppy for comparison, but I do have these three close siblings. As you can see, the two poppies are nearly identical, and China Town is just a slight bit deeper.

One last one (for today... ;) ). Two medium cobalt blue inks that could be used interchangeably. The main difference would be cost per ounce/ml (PR is cheaper), and shape of the bottle (PR's bottle is somewhat more pen friendly).

Is the PR as hard to clean as Eclat du Saphir? It's one of the stickiest blues I've dealt with.

I hadn't noticed "hard to clean" as a feature of either of these inks. Must be the pens I had them in.

Interesting. I've had Eclat du Saphir in a couple of usually not difficult pens, and it's been a chore to get them clean. I think the feed is still blue in one of them.

Loved the ink, though. A beautiful color and very nice to write with. Just not one I ever want to take out of a pen.

Oh nuts. I just put it in my 146 thinking that Eclat would be easy to clean out, since it's an Herbin. Darn.

Hi Fabienne I wouldn't worry too much about EdS in your 146. It has always cleaned up very easily for me in everything from a celluloid 146 to a modern LE. It's one of the few inks I trust blindly in all my pens so I'm surprised to hear it gave Lou such a hard time! I bought my current bottle last year, but maybe they reformulated it without telling us (as they sometimes do like the recent 1670 Bleu Ocean reformulation... :/) I'm sorry to hear it behaved so naughtily in your pens Lou!

Oh thanks. That makes me feel a lot better. I love Eclat and I thought it worked wonderfully in the 146.

FPN Dumas Tulipe Noire (not currently available) versus Diamine Tyrian Purple (available). You could probably add microscopic amounts of black to the Diamine to get it closer to the Dumas.

Thanks to @amberlea for generously giving me a bottle of the Dumas from her vast store of unobtainium. For the record, as much as I love Diamine inks, I prefer Noodler's in this case.

I am no longer very active on FPN but feel free to message me. Or send me a postal letter!

Interesting, I had no idea those inks were so similar!

Thank you very much for this comparison! :)

Thanks for the shout out! I prefer the Noodler's / FPN not only for performance, but because it supports our support group community.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

A surprising set of twins are Seitz & Kruznach's Arktisch Blau and Diamine's Marine. One is just ever so slightly more blue (AB), and the other just slightly more green (Marine):

Oooh! Nice! AB looks like a darker version of O.S. Nickel. I can send you a sample if you like. :)

I have these two - for me not similar at all. My Marine is a lot darker than this.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
