Yes, Konrad is the Ink Master. Right now the easiest/affordable way to get them is through a Group Buy. Follow the link in my signature, the KWZI Second Group Buy is completed, but I will announce in that thread when we are ready for the next one. It won't be until the new year

In the meantime, drop me a PM with your mailing address and I can mail you a sample of #36 for you to play with and decide if you really want it.. (You will... :P)

Thanks! I'll do that!

Wow what an awesome resource!

Thank you Cyber6 and everyone who is contributing! I am definitely going to follow this thread!

Quick question - I use a small Clairefontaine notebook for my ink/pen journal which is perfect for me. But what do you guys use for the ink swab cards (are they pre-cut cards? Or are you cutting out your own out of certain papers?) And how do you store the the cards?

Thank you for any advice!

I use the Marumam Nmemosyne Cards.. (you can find them at JetPens)..

But that is cause I wanted an easy way to keep track of my inks without much effort from me. I am sure you can find better paper (the Mnemosyne paper is good but not the BEST fountain pen paper) and cut your own. You can also buy the ring tops in a dollar store. I have them organized by alphabetical by brand and then by ink name. Once I locate the ones I want.. I can remove them and scan/compare them side by side. VERY useful.

The rich Montblanc Lavender is difficult to source within Australia - is there a substitute? Anything even close?

Thanks, Visvamitra, the 60 violets purples comparison is one of my favourite threads, your work is outstanding.

But even amongst that many inks there's nothing quite like the Montblanc Lavender.

This post-50931-0-24350000-1420203276_thumb.jpgis one of the ways I compare colors. I have one rack for inks I have whole bottles of, and the others are ones I only have as the sample vials.

I'm totally impressed! Like Vis, I'm too messy.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Well, I'm messy in other ways! But thanks, amberleadavis and visvamitra!

And Visvamitra, your purple samples are awesome! I love that you did them in different ways, so we can see how they behave under different circumstances. Wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing all this!

Great thread!

Here's my contribution: Now defunct Organic Studios Maganate (Maganese) is very close to new up-and-comer KWZI #23 IG Blue #2. The KWZI is only a touch more blue.

That is the most visual means of use and comparison I have seen yet; wonderful!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
