Battle Of The Inks - Doppelgänger Edition

Cyber6

Recommended Posts

So, at one point of another... we have all said.. "Wow, I wish I could get THAT ink".. but is discontinue/expensive/unobtanium .. etc

So, here is the place where you should come and check if "THAT" ink has a Doppelgänger (look-alike, double, one who nearly or completely resembles another).. I will start...

I will remind you, that even the same ink looks different depending on nib/flow/paper .. so these are examples inks with the same/similar hue.. that depending on your nib/flow/paper it might look identical..

Have you heard of Sailor Tanna Japonensis (Evening Cicada).. what about Sailor Shin Zan (Deep in the Forest).. well if you can't get those, you can grab a bottle of Safari.. is cheaper, not exclusive, and easy to find. :P

photo below... (in real person they look almost identical)

fpn_1416780053__comp_safariphoto.jpg

Knowing how famous scanners and pictures are for not completely represent what your eyes perceived, you get both... and take my word for it.. With the right pen you can get the exact look. ;)

Have you seen the mouthwatering Diamine Wagner, from the Music Set... Well, I was not going to get the whole set when I was just drooling for Wagner (I like others in the set now, but originally only Wagner was calling my name)

Well.. Wagner seems to be right in the middle of Ina Ho and Vert Olive...

So yeah... I mixed myself some Wagner... :P ... I believe Diamine is now selling the Music and Flower refills individually, so now is easier to just buy Wagner than mix one.

Very cool! I will have to root through my journal and pick out some more doppelgangers!

Be forewarned... I will eye-bang the bejeezus out of your pens...

I'm still bemoaning the discontinuation of the Caran d'Ache Caribbean Sea. Diamine Marine and Diamine Steel Blue come closest, but lack the same shading. :-(

I'm still working on getting cards of all my inks and samples, but have already discovered some look a likes. Can I post them here later?

Breathe. Take one step at a time. Don't sweat the small stuff. You're not getting older, you are only moving through time. Be calm and positive.

Please do so. This will be a work in progress. In a forum where everyone is an "enabler" and most of us try hard to hide our wallets... Maybe, just maybe... we can help someone save some money.. ;)

Nope these are watercolors, I'm just trying to get you hooked too

1. "Green Gold" - pigment PY129

2. "Nickel Yellow" - pigment PY150

3. "Quinacridone Gold" - pigment PO49

They're all "dual tone" or, in FP ink speak translation, great shaders (the tone will change with dilution).

The fun part is that PY129 is technically an unsaturated pure yellow - and it's all some sort of weird thing that we perceive unsaturated yellows as having a green tint (which a colorimeter will disprove).

That will be a hard one to match... below is Diamine Steel and KWZI #36.. The scan makes it look bluer... KWZI #36 is your closest bet.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
