Thanks everyone for contributing.

I have settled on Private Reserve Ebony Purple. :) It looks like the closest to a purple-black, which is just what I'm looking for.

I was also looking for a dark purple ink when I looked at Goulet's ink sample palooza.

I selected De Atramentis Alexander Hamilton, and it's exactly like I expected.

If you can afford to buy a Sailor Bung Box ink next September, then you should look at Sweet Potato Purple

I really like Diamine Bilberry--it shades beautifully.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

Add another vote each for Noodler's La Reine Mauve and Sailor Shigure. LRM is an "eternal" ink so I like it for note taking. Shigure flows beautiful but is very very dark. I can honestly say that the Sailor Four Seasons inks are my favourite line because of hpw wonderfully they flow and Shigure is no exception.

Hi Tom,

I just saw that you picked the Ebony purple but in case you decide you need more :P I was actually just looking for a purple black too, and I ordered the SankoDo Nishikisan Purple Black by Sailor this week after seeing Saskia_Madding's beautiful photos and recommendations of the ink. Here is a link:

Another even darker purple black is the Bung Box Ink of the Witch also by Sailor (and some photos once again in another great review from Saskia_Madding :) ):

I wanted something that was on the blue side rather than the red side for a dark purple. I found the perfect ink for me in Diamine Bilberry.

What did you decide?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

Try Caran d'Ache STORM.

A little more expensive than French perfume but worth it. :)

"There is a kind of magical feature to writing: the ability to stand the test of time. As such, it is our gateway to Eternity".

"For a hand that can hold a featherless baby bird and not make bird paste, then a vintage pen is the best way to fly".

Specially if you can put your hands on it, the Colours of Earth series is out from stock, and eve the basic Blue Sky and Carbon is getting rare... But the Chromatics are nice to and the Ultra Violet is the closest. But definitely have wonderful bottles and perfect ink flow.

I am glad you have made R&K Scabiosa as one of your choices. For the last year or so I've had Scabiosa in my ink rotation. It's not a very dark purple ink, but it has a tremendous ability to shade.

I have D. grape and J H p.d.l and the are both very similar and very dark. You could also mix some black in there as well

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
