I called it Indigo Sea. Sargasso Sea is a great mixing ink.

Damning with faint praise???

OH No, I love Sargasso Sea, but it's a super saturated stainer and not for the faint of heart or those who let ink dry out in pens.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Visconti Blue. I discovered this gorgeous blue ink from the discussions on FPN. I've been looking for a new blue, and had decided on Diamine Blue Velvet before I got a sample of this. The two inks are very closely matched, and it's a bakeoff to decide which I'm going to purchase as a full bottle. I currently have Visconti Blue loaded in an Aurora pen (sacrilege!) for longer-term testing.

On my samples, the Visconti flows a little wetter than Blue Velvet, and is just a touch more purple. Dry time on the Rhodia paper is fairly quick. This ink is also a close match to Private Reserve DC Supershow Blue.

Ahh, so the BSB of the Diamine Universe...

I'll have to get some.

I was not entirely aware of the stainage factor, but I love the color, the shading, and the sheen.

On the suggestion that it might get goopy and gunky, I did my coffee-filter procedure. Oh my. When I poured the Sargasso Sea out of the bottle, either the glass of the bottle was actually stained, or it left a film residue that coated the glass. In any event, this is one powerful ink... :o

Now on to other blues. A new acquisition for the New Year: Montblanc Miles Davis Jazz Blue.

At first, I was scared that it would be too light and too boring, but I have to admit it is a really nice shade of sky blue —not turquoise or cyan, just a bright, light blue. Jazzy and subtle, hard to pin down. I like that.

Here are some images for context:

Looks like this ink's closest relative —in color— is Sailor Souten.

Herbert, I liked your Tekker light blue (forgot the name). I liked it's transparency. But I just dislike MB Miles Jazz Blue. Maybe it's because it's not a colour that should be linked to this name.

I see your point. But I look at the name as an homage, a way to celebrate him. Perhaps you can think of it as the soft blue of cigarette smoke in a cool jazz club... ??

DC, let's make up a list of which inks I need to pick up for you when I'm at the LA pen show.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
