What's Going On With Richard Binder's Shop & Nib Service?

Is he really closing his shop and customized nib service?

If so, what other alternatives companies are there to his customized nib services?, specifically other nib customizing services that can customize Namiki Pilot Vanishing Point nibs?

I'm still kind of new to the customize nib world and have only been using Mr. Binder's service. And I'm addicted to customized nibs now.

Please help!! Thanks

He's winding down and taking a well-earned step back from the retail business, but will remain active as an enthusiast:)

I am fond of Mr. Masuyama's work, and in fact anticipate the arrival of one of my pens from his workshop.

As I recall, according to recent Nib Noise newsletters, Richard and Barbara will continue the Nibarama aspect of the business, "as long as it makes sense to do so". This means it will be possible to buy loose Binderized nib units and nib units plus customization as before. Hurray!

My understanding is that they will no longer be a retail outlet for whole pens, nor accept incoming pens for service.

There are a number of other nibmeisters and repair specialists that have had good testimonials from clients here on FPN...

Hello TeaTherapy,

From what I understand, Richard no longer repairs pens; he is continuing to run his store-front if you wish to buy a pen, (I do not know if he is taking on new inventory or just selling out his existing stock). He also continues sales of used pens with his Pen Show Tray and Barbara's Attic Tray.

He has been closed for an extended period of time due to a death in the family. However, I believe he resumed sales yesterday and will resume shipping this Saturday.

Best regards,

Chris

Per the Nib Noise news letter from Richard:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** Retail Closing Down ***
------------------------------------------------------------------------

As noted above, we are closing down our retail sales of pens and
accessories. As our current stocks sell out, we will not be restocking
these items. Most of the accessories we no longer carry can be found at
Indy-Pen-Dance:

http://www.indy-pen-dance.com/

* Even after our pen and accessory sales are gone, there will still be
the Pen Show Tray and Barbara's Attic Tray.

* Also after our pen and accessory sales are gone, we will still have
nibs for an indefinite time, and we'll keep the NIBARAMA page running for
as long as it makes sense to do so.

* We will still attend -- and work at -- several pen shows every year.
Our next show after Ohio will be the Philadelphia Pen Show, in January.

* The Gate City Pen Company already has a new home. Find out all about it
here:

http://www.gatecitypen.com/

* We will be able to accept some orders for special pens or nibs. For
example, Bexley's 2015 Owners Club pens are available now to registered
Bexley owners, and we will be happy to order yours for you. Special
orders will need to be prepaid, and we can guide you in placing your
orders with us.

Looks like Indy Pen Dance is the new owner of Gate City Pens.

I would urge you to contact Tim Girdler at -Phone: (304) 839-9448 He was trained personally by Richard and is an accomplished nib meister. He is fast and affordable and will not dissapoint you. He worked on one of my nibs from a really uncommon pen a Parker 012 Jointless and it looks and acts like new.

You will not regret using his services.

Thank you for this info Jerry; I've been wondering where I'd send vintage pens for service, (if I ever buy any). Being in West Virginia, he's close to me. :D

Hello TT,

If you're buying NEW pens and want them custom adjusted to your tastes; John Mottishaw of HisNibs.com also sells his new pens as "pens that write right." ;)

Best regards,

Chris

PS: I should also mention, I've never purchased a new pen from him, but he does enjoy a rock solid reputation in FP Land.

I have bought a pen from John M, and it was a smooth transaction, and a very nicely adjusted pen. I believe his site is actually http://www.nibs.com/ - hisnibs is a different site.

Hello Lou,

Yes. You're right. Thanks for catching this typographical faux pas. (I always get the two places confused). :)

Sad news, really. I have always wanted to buy a pen with customized nib from Mr. Binder - if only to see what all of the fuss is about :P - but have never come up with the $$ to do so; now it is likely that I never will find out what all the fuss was about!

I wonder if he will maintain reference pages on his website or if that resource, too, will be gone when Richard and Barbara call it quits as far as their pen business is concerned. That would be a shame....

By the way, Pendleton Brown was also trained by Richard B. I have a nib customized by Pendleton with his butter~line stub italic grind. I really like it and plan to do business with him again. In addition to Tim G. and John M., you might want to add him to your list of likely candidates to be your new nibmeister, TeaTherapy.

I've had several pens purchased from or modified by Pendleton Brown and he's an excellent nibmeister. In fact, I purchased a Pilot VP from him at the Atlanta Pen Show this year (2014) and it was a beautiful writer. I actually wasn't even looking for that particular pen, but when I went to his table, I wrote with it while he was adjusting another pen of mine and when I came back later he told me that my handwriting with that pen was "all the rage."

After hearing that, I couldn't help but purchase it. Wonderful pen! And Pendleton is a wonderful guy with awesome values. He'll do it right.

I have also purchased from Nibs.com and have had excellent results there as well.

No, that's not blood. That's Noodler's Antietam.

I've done business with both Tim Girdler and Linda Kennedy (Indy-Pen-Dance). Both have been training with Richard Binder, and both do extremely good nib work, IMHO. As things unfold, it also appears that Indy-Pen-Dance is also carrying on with the pens of the Gate City Pen Company. Too bad nobody is able to carry on with their Ever Flo inks.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
