My One Little Green Estie Sj Seems To Have Multiplied....

That one little green SJ that sparked my interest has turned into this in a short amount of time. I'm not sure how it happened.

I've cleaned and re-sacced every one of them (except the NOS ones). 9 Dollar pens, 4 Transitionals, and the rest are various sizes of the J family.

Not pictured is a large, three rib jeweled, Fern Green, Transitional Estie (not sure how I missed it when I was taking the photo).

That's it? Just the J series and antecedents?

Well, thats it for the Esterbrooks, I have plenty of other fountain pens but this was just an Estie family photo.

Oops, actually there are 5 more that didn't make the picture. 2 black LJs, another green dollar pen, (plus the 3 rib jeweled one I mentioned earlier), and a red Transitional, bringing the total up to 29........ plus two more on the way! A copper and a grey J on the way still.

And I thought I had gone overboard a bit with a dozen....

So, enquiring minds want to know -- what nibs are on all these babies?

ETA: In my case it was the chance find of a black SJ with a 1555 Gregg nib....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Nothing fancy or rare, mostly 26XXs and 15XXs, a few GREGGs. So far the 1551 is my favorite but I have some 2556s and other fine nibs that I'd like to trade off.

Beautiful! That photo is an awe inspiring sight. You've come a long way in a short time. Aren't they wonderful?! You have almost as many as I have, but I have been gathering mine over my whole long life. That being the case, you have outdistanced me by miles and miles. I salute you! There are others here who have far more Esterbrooks than I, but if you continue at this present rate, you will be the undisputed Esterbrook J king.

Enjoy!

Thank you Sir, but now I'm on a self imposed moratorium on Estie buying, no more till after a mid January trip to NOLA. I can't spend anymore money till after that trip, but Estie buying has proven addictive for me. :-)

I love how you rainbowed your collection. When I have all of mine together again, I will do so too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
