Stormy Grey Problem

Uncial

Recommended Posts

So, I really like this ink, but there is one thing that is really, really irritating me - the bottle! I actually like the bottle, but did the neck have to be so darned narrow? The gold particles settle so very, very quickly and I've discovered that most of my pens won't fit in the narrow neck. It's starting to really irritate me because I find that every time I fill up a pen it is only getting the top section of the ink by which stage all of the particles have filtered down to the bottom of the bottle.

Has anyone else got this problem and how did you solve it? I've thought about transferring it into another bottle, but I fear that by doing so I might loose a load of the gold.

Well you could try shaking the bottle up first, then transferring some ink via syringe into a sample vial. In that way you'll get the gold too!

What I usually do is shake the bottle well, then syringe the ink into my TWSBI Mini.

I'll be following this thread with great interest as I have a bottle of SG on order and definitely want to learn how to maximize the gold sheen.

I have mine in a TWSBI Vac 700, via a Vac 20 inkwell. It goes good shake --> Vac 20 --> good shake --> Vac 700!

I too noticed the narrow neck and the gold settling very fast. I used a syringe after shaking up the bottle but you have to do that very fast as the gold will settle after a couple of seconds. I didn't get quite the sheen as with other writing samples I've seen but sheening nonetheless. I doubt my 149 will fit in the bottle

I actually quite like the narrow necks on all the 1670 bottles. it's put me into a good habit of decanting the ink into either vials or a traveling ink pot. I find I get a good deal of flakes this way as an eyedropper suctions the flakes in suspension (or even at the bottom) very well with Stormy Grey or Rouge Hematite. Then, you can refill anywhere you are, or even better, share with a friend :)

I shake it up alright and I can get the nib part way on on some pens. I guess I will have to find a syringe and decant into a more suitable bottle.

Shake, fill syringe, fill pen. Same with the Rouge Hematite

That's what I do.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

This is a related question for anyone who has used the rouge hematite or the stormy grey: have you had any problems with the gold flakes clogging your pen? Do you restrict the pen you use these inks in to one that is not an expensive pen, just in case? I'm curious because I just bought a bottle of the rouge hematite, and I've been wrestling with which pen to fill it with..

Thanks! CindyK

It's got the gold in it and on top of that, they are pretty saturated ink colors without anything additional like the gold.

My suggestion is to put it in a pen you KNOW you can clean well. Being able to take the feed, nib, and body apart on their own would be best - you can clean them easier and inspect if anything is clogged.

Buy a Standard or Medium-large pen.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
