Yard O Led 'clogged'

I got a lovely Yard-O-Led, second hand, good condition, but am having problems getting it to write. I have flushed, flushed, flushed with warm water and an ear bulb 'skoosher', but there seems to be a build up of ink just round the joint between the nib and the part which holds the nib; when I lean it on damp kitchen towel, a purpley blue ink comes out. Im itching to use it....any suggestions? Will have one last flush and see if it clears. Should I send it to be serviced? Any help gratefully received.

Soak it overnight. Or use a pen flush. Not sure if 10% ammonia will play nice with sterling silver, but soaking definitely won't hurt.

 

You could also try pulling the nib and feed out so that you can scrub the feed really well. It should be a friction feed.

Im a novice....confess I don't know what a friction feed is( scuttles off to look it up)...many thanks!

As I am not familiar with the pen you're working on, I can't offer specific advice. In general terms I prefer to proceed using plain room-temp water plus flushing with an aspirator bulb prior to escalating to a chemical clean-up. I am disinclined to take a pen to bits for clean-up unless I'm confident that the pen is user-serviceable and that I can put it back together - re-setting the nib+feed can be very tricky.

 

Skipping a chemical clean-up in favour of a water + ultrasonic clean-up is a viable option.

 

When rescuing a clogged 'as found' pen, the watchword is patience.

If it's a standard or pocket size pen. You WILL NOT be able to pull the nib and feed. You can with a grand, but this is a last resort.

 

Soak & flush, soak & flush, soak & flush... As mentioned above, an ultrasonic cleaner will probably help. Maplin sells them (other vendors are available, I'll leave it to your conscience which you use). Alternatively, send it to a repairer.

Yard o Led has lovely lifetime service, which is rare. I've sent in a 10 year old pen for service with awesome results. Patience with the flushing. Give it a few days as you may be fighting years of ink buildup. That is a lovely pen you've got. Don't be in a rush.
